Interdependencies of aortic arch secondary flow patterns, geometry, and age analysed by 4-dimensional phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging at 3 Tesla

Abstract: • Secondary blood flow patterns (helices, vortices) are commonly observed in the aorta • Secondary flow patterns predominantly depend on patient age and aortic diameter • Geometric factors show a lesser impact on blood flow patterns than age and diameter • Future analyses of flow patterns should incorporate age- and diameter dependencies.

“…Other studies confirm our findings10, 11 and align with the idea that WSS should be reduced in the presence of an enlarged vessel (holding stroke volume constant: mean velocity and thus velocity gradients will be reduced, which, in turn, will reduce WSS) 32. The presence of vortex and supraphysiological helical flow has shown to be significantly increased in the setting of the dilated ascending aorta and an increase in ascending aortic diameter is significantly correlated with the presence of aberrant flow (elevated helix and vortex formation) 33. These observed blood flow patterns were associated with changes in regional peak systolic WSS in the AAo and proximal aortic arch.…”

“…To evaluate the integrals in Equations [8] and [9], we used a four-point quadrature scheme (42), and considered the the fact that v ðxÞ was optimally approximated by v FEM ij ðxÞ at the Gauss points. To reduce the computational effort to solve Equation [7] without compromising its accuracy, the matrix M was replaced by a diagonal lumped matrix M~, where…”
