Interannual variability in the peatland‐atmosphere carbon dioxide exchange at an ombrotrophic bog

Abstract: [1] Eddy covariance measurements of net ecosystem carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) exchange (NEE) were taken at an ombrotrophic bog near Ottawa, Canada from 1 June 1998 to 31 May 2002. Temperatures during this period were above normal except for 2000 and precipitation was near normal in 1998 and 1999, above normal in 2000, and well below normal in 2001. Growing period maximum daytime uptake (À0.45 mg CO 2 m À2 s À1 ) was similar in all years and nighttime maximum respiration was typically near 0.20 mg CO 2 m À2 s À1 , h… Show more

“…We used an in-house Matlab (Mathworks, Natick, MA) script to do a first automated quality control of the 30-min flux and climate data following the established FCRN (Fluxnet-Canada Research Network) guidelines (Lafleur et al 2003;Roulet et al 2007). The quality control procedure followed Bergeron and Strachan (2011) and included the removal of raw high-frequency data spikes (Vickers and Mahrt 1997) and out-of-range data points (e.g.…”

“…For atmospheric flux measurements, northern wetland and permafrost ecosystems are relatively well covered with a reasonable spread across the circumpolar North (e.g. Oechel et al 2000;Nordstroem et al 2001;Aurela et al 2002;Lafleur et al 2003;Friborg et al 2004;in prep. ;Corradi et al 2005), whilst more CO 2 and CH 4 flux monitoring stations in tropical wetlands are needed.…”

“…In this paper we focus on hydrological dynamics of peatlands, as the water balance of peatlands plays a critical role in their carbon balance (Lafleur et al, 2003). Kettridge et al (2013) showed the importance of peatland hydrology as a regulatory control on carbon dynamics and the future stability of peatland carbon stocks and regional water dynamics.…”
