Interactive Mesh-Free Stress Analysis for Mechanical Design Assembly With Haptics

Abstract: This paper describes a virtual reality application that performs fast stress reanalysis coupled with virtual reality and haptics that allows rapid evaluation of multiple designs throughout the product design process. The Interactive Virtual Design Application (IVDA) allows the engineer to interactively explore new design geometry while simultaneously examining the finite element analysis results. In the presence of other parts in the assembly, the new shape can be analyzed and modified, taking into considerati… Show more

“…Careful precomputation and/or linearization of the model can also yield interactive results. Such an approach was taken in [6] to give a design engineer interactive haptic feedback on stress computations given model shape changes.…”

“…The OPCODE (Optimized Collision Detection) library [29] has been incorporated into IVDA so that several models can be analyzed and assembled without models intersecting with each other [30,31]. This software identifies collisions between deformable meshes and therefore is well suited for this work.…”
