In most design projects, the documentation of design decisions is considered important. Among others, documentation of design decisions contributes to the traceability of decisions that shape a project’s development process, helps deal with changes in the project and prevents the recurrence of old discussions. Yet, little attention is given to documenting design decisions in the engineering literature. In this study, a theoretical framework for the key elements of this documentation process was developed. Four infrastructure projects were studied and compared to this framework by means of pattern matching. This method compares theoretical and empirical patterns and determines whether they match or do not match. The findings demonstrate that accessibility of documentation for all involved project parties and the division of documentation tasks are in accordance with the literature. However, the documentation of design decisions and their rationale is not done as completely as is recommended in theory. Literature states that the documentation of interrelations and context of decisions should be described thoroughly, but that is barely done in practice. In addition, the findings show that neither immediate documentation nor periodical monitoring of documentation is applied. Based on these findings, this research proposes a strategy for improving the documentation of design decisions.

Many oil and gas companies are looking for new opportunities in the renewable energy market. New energy systems, especially those with subsea large‐scale hydrogen storage functions, have become an important part of the global energy transition. Oil and gas companies, like the case company, utilize experience and technologies from the subsea oil and gas sector to develop large‐scale hydrogen storage systems. In systems development, there is a need for efficient knowledge transfer from the current team to new stakeholders joining the team. To meet this need, this research investigates how to use A3 Architectural Overviews (A3AOs) to facilitate the efficient knowledge transfer between the current team and the future engineer team in the renewable energy project of the case company. Drawing from the system engineering methodology, we first identified key stakeholders and their needs and studied the current knowledge transfer situation. The solution based on A3AOs has been developed and optimized in this study. This final solution has been verified and validated by the testing workshop, survey, and expert evaluation.

Modeling and simulation studies can greatly increase insight in the behavior of complex systems. However, if the person executing the study is unable to communicate its results, the usefulness of the effort is significantly reduced. The multidisciplinary nature of systems engineering and architecting impedes an easy transfer of knowledge in this regard. In this paper, we discuss simulation activities from a communication viewpoint and describe the key elements in this process. These elements are brought together in a conceptual model. We then discuss how this model can be utilized using the principles of the A3 Architecting Overview method to enable more effective and efficient communication of modeling activities. Finally we show an application of this approach and discuss its results and impacts. We conclude that while the conceptual model is complete for the presented application, more research in other domains is necessary to fully validate the model.
