Rotifers display r‐strategy life‐histories and are adaptable to environmental disturbances. Although rotifers constitute a large proportion of zooplankton in river‐floodplain systems, the influence of hydrology on their assemblage has been poorly studied. We postulated that rotifer assemblage and grazing activities were controlled by mechanisms associated with hydrological conditions. We conducted a 5‐year study (Kopački Rit Nature Park, NE Croatia) to assess the influence of hydrology on (a) rotifer assemblage during different hydrological phases, (b) the vertical distribution of rotifer abundance, functional feeding guilds, and grazing intensity, and (c) the main drivers affecting rotifer assemblage in the floodplain lake. The results indicated that (a) during isolation, longer residence time and high phytoplankton biomass microfilter‐feeders (mIff) and macrofilter‐feeders (mAff) grazing rates were similar whereas predators (Pr) were the most efficient consumers, (b) during high flow pulses, high conductivity and variable water level governed rotifer grazing rates of mIff and mAff at a retion of 1:2 and a decline of Pr grazing activity, and (c) during the flood pulse, reduced phytoplankton biomasss still resulted in mAff and Pr domination of the community whereas mIff grazing activity remained at the same level. Under stable hydrological conditions algivorous species codominated with bacterivores and predators, suggesting an increased biodiversity and food web interactions. In contrast, throughout the inundation period, algivorous species predominated. However, differences in rotifer assemblage between normal flow and flood pulses indicated the importance of hydrology in shaping rotifer trophic structure through modifying lower trophic levels and the availability of food sources.

Zooplankton communities of inter-connected sections of lower River Oder (NW Poland)

The aim of this study was the determination and comparative analysis of the zooplankton communities between the inter-connected sections of the lower Oder river in relation to physicochemical factors. The study was performed at five sites of Oder. Two sites were localized in the main channel of Oder (East Oder), other sites were localized in the west arm of Oder and at the beginning of the canal carrying the post-cooling water from the power plant, and the last site was below at the shallow channel joining the Western Oder with the Eastern Oder. At the channel site in which the two arms of the river are connected a significantly higher taxa number, abundance and biomass of crustaceans was observed than at the other sites. The taxonomic similarity index between all sites was at a rather low level. The Pearson’s coefficient, multiple regression analysis and CCA showed that temperature, conductivity and content of nitrates had the strongest impact on the abundance of zooplankton. Thus, in lower, slowly flowing section of River Oder the physico-chemical variables influenced zooplankton density. Post-cooling water from the power plant influenced the zooplankton communities only in the channel discharging the waters into the river, while its influence on the zooplankton in the Oder is insignificant.

Phosphorus cycling between components of the ecosystem of the hypertrophic Lake Swarzędzkie was studied in [2000][2001][2002][2003]. The results of this study revealed considerable seasonal variation in phosphorus cycling. The main sources of phosphorus load in winter were the tributaries, whereas in summer internal loading prevailed. However, the most effective source of SRP (soluble reactive phosphorus) for phytoplankton primary production in summer was its excretion by organisms from the microbial loop. The share of this source in the total phosphorus pool was 38%, whereas internal loading contributed 23.7%, external loading 16.3%, and regeneration by metazooplankton 22%. This exerted a significant influence on the functioning of the whole lake ecosystem. Limiting both external and internal phosphorus loading is recommended to facilitate water quality improvement in the lake.
