The article aims to find out what proactive or reactive actions of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) helped them survive during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study focuses specifically on how the use of public aid and the restrictions' circumvention impacted the outcomes of SMEs adjustment strategies. Research Design & Methods: Adjustment strategies of small and medium enterprises representing restaurant, spa & beauty, fitness, and hotel industries were investigated. The interviews with business owners were analyzed using fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to present non-linear interdependencies between the applied measures and their outcomes. Findings: Successful adjustment strategies were contained in a spectrum of proactive actions combined with the circumvention of restrictions and the use of public aid. Strategies on the verge of survival were characterized by reactive measures accompanied by the use of public aid. Implications & Recommendations: Proactivity significantly boosts the probability of successful survival, but it can take both legal forms and those that by design circumvent the law. Contribution & Value Added: This paper contributes to understanding the impact of public aid on adjustment strategies of small and medium-sized enterprises in the B2C sector and deepening the knowledge on the grounds of SMEs (non)compliance with restrictions. Proactive strategies can include an element of law circumvention with the simultaneous use of public aid measures. Article type:research article

Multidimensional Aspect of Corporate Entrepreneurship in Family Business and SMEs: A Systematic Literature Review

This study aimed to review and analyze corporate entrepreneurship (CE) within family businesses and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), providing a review of the current state of research and suggesting a future research agenda. In a systematic literature review, 1040 articles indexed in Scopus were initially subjected to bibliometric and qualitative analysis. Finally, 53 papers published in various academic journals, focusing on corporate entrepreneurship, family businesses, and SMEs, were subjected to bibliometric analysis and qualitative research to identify the new potential state of the art in corporate entrepreneurship. CE in family businesses and SMEs is not a general research trend in the entrepreneurial area. This research shows that the literature on CE models and tools in family businesses and SMEs is still sparse. The review results correlate the actors of CE, behavior, and activities, including entrepreneurial orientation, entrepreneurial management, and entrepreneurial leadership and performance, as outcomes in family business and SMEs.

These days, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face more severe competition in foreign markets due to the globalization of the economy (e.g., FTA). They usually lack technological capabilities and often depend on external R&D activities. Thus, it is worth exploring what factors facilitate SMEs’ R&D collaboration with partners. This paper empirically analyzes the determinants of SMEs’ selections of R&D cooperation partners in Korea. According to the regression results, SMEs with a larger labor force in R&D, larger sales, younger CEOs, more advanced technologies, and less R&D equipment are more likely to cooperate with external R&D partners. When SMEs produce a product that is not easily imitated by others, they are more willing to cooperate with universities or research institutions but not with suppliers or customers. In sum, for Korean SMEs, the arguments of appropriability and resource complementarity appear to work in their R&D activities. However, the former is more important for collaborations with universities or research institutions, and the latter is more influential to those with suppliers and customers. This paper contributes to the literature in two aspects—quantitative studies on the collaborative innovation of SMEs are still limited, and the differences in cooperation determinants across types of partners are explored due to the richness of the dataset.
