Interaction of Medicinal Plants and Their Active Constituents With Potassium Ion Channels: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Potassium ion (K+) channels are pore-forming transmembrane proteins that control the transport of K+ ions. Medicinal plants are widely used as complementary therapies for several disorders. Studies have shown that the modulation of K+ channels is most likely involved in various pharmacological effects of medicinal plants. This review aimed to evaluate the modulatory effects of medicinal plants and their active constituents on K+ channels under pathological conditions. This systematic review was prepared accord… Show more

“…PGE2 is continuously synthesized by COX in gastric epithelial cells, and its production can be blocked by indomethacin. Potassium-selective ion channels are pore-forming proteins that allow potassium ions (K + ) to pass through the plasma membrane [ 51 ]. It is involved in smooth muscle cell relaxation and gastric mucosal defense, but glyburide inhibits this effect [ 52 ].…”

“…The efficacy of this treatment is equivalent to that of classic medicines, such as carbenoxolone and cimetidine, which are used for treating GMI ( Arunachalam, et al, 2019 ). Furthermore, in some injury models, its efficacy is even better than that of carbenoxolone and cimetidine ( Rajabian, et al, 2022 ). Finally, the efflux of K + ions after opening blocks the voltage-sensitive Ca 2+ channels, which ultimately results in the dilation of blood vessels and improvement of smooth muscle contraction, thereby increasing GMBF.…”
