In the last decades, 3D city models appear to have been predominantly used for visualisation; however, today they are being increasingly employed in a number of domains and for a large range of tasks beyond visualisation. In this paper, we seek to understand and document the state of the art regarding the utilisation of 3D city models across multiple domains based on a comprehensive literature study including hundreds of research papers, technical reports and online resources. A challenge in a study such as ours is that the ways in which 3D city models are used cannot be readily listed due to fuzziness, terminological ambiguity, unclear added-value of 3D geoinformation in some instances, and absence of technical information. To address this challenge, we delineate a hierarchical terminology (spatial operations, use cases, applications), and develop a theoretical reasoning to segment and categorise the diverse uses of 3D city models. Following this framework, we provide a list of identified use cases of 3D city models (with a description of each), and their applications. Our study demonstrates that 3D city models are employed in at least 29 use cases that are a part of more than 100 applications. The classified inventory could be useful for scientists as well as stakeholders in the geospatial industry, such as companies and national mapping agencies, as it may serve as a reference document to better position their operations, design product portfolios, and to better understand the market.

In this paper we present a unique hybrid visualization system for spatial data. Although some existing 3D GIS systems offer 2D views they are typically isolated from the 3D view in that they are presented in a separate window. Our system is a novel hybrid 2D/3D approach that seamlessly integrates 2D and 3D views of the same data. In our interface, multiple layers of information are continuously transformed between the 2D and 3D modes under the control of the user, directly over a base-terrain. In this way, our prototype system is able to depict 2D and 3D views within the same window. This has advantages, since 2D and 3D visualizations can each be easier to interpret in different contexts.In this work we develop this concept of a hybrid visualization by presenting a comprehensive set of capabilities within our distinctive system. These include new facilities such as: hybrid landmark, 3D point, and chart layers, the grouping of multiple hybrid layers, layer painting, the merging of layer controls and consistent zooming functionality.

Three-dimensional (3D) maps have many potential applications, such as navigation and urban planning. In this article, we present the use of a 3D virtual world platform Meshmoon to create intelligent open data 3D maps. A processing method is developed to enable the generation of 3D virtual environments from the open data of the National Land Survey of Finland. The article combines the elements needed in contemporary smart city concepts, such as the connection between attribute information and 3D objects, and the creation of collaborative virtual worlds from open data. By using our 3D virtual world platform, it is possible to create up-to-date, collaborative 3D virtual models, which are automatically updated on all viewers. In the scenes, all users are able to interact with the model, and with each other. With the developed processing methods, the creation of virtual world scenes was partially automated for collaboration activities.
