Interaction in virtual world views-linking 3D GIS with VR

Abstract: To support 3D GIS interaction within VR-environments we propose a multi-view approach based on three types of visualization: plan view, model view and world view. The visualization in these views ranges from a conventional map, through a partly symbolic and simpli® ed 3D representation to a full immersive and photo-realistic 3D display. The views can be used simultaneously or intermittently, and each provides a repertoire of interaction possibilities that are aptÐ but not necessarily limitedÐ to that view. We … Show more

“…For instance, the distribution and share of a building type in a neighbourhood is of interest to marketing and real estate management. [152], crime mapping [153,154], serious gaming [155,156], and augmented reality [157][158][159][160][161][162][163][164][165][166][167]. It is not our intention to further delineate each of these, as it entails more ambiguity with respect to the taxonomy.…”

“…Attempts to overcome these problems, in 3D GIS, usually involve displaying the terrain from several different viewpoints. Verbee et al (1999) proposed a multi-view approach based on different types of visualization to support interaction with a 3D GIS. Their multi-view approach allowed interaction of GIS data within 3 different view types, namely: plan view, model view and world view.…”

“…Systems that visualize GIS data in a 3D VR were also developed in laboratories already in the 1990s. One of the examples combining GIS with VR was introduced by Verbree et al [18]. With this system, different views (map, aerial view, and street-level view) and functionalities are used to support urban planning [18].…”

“…MLS has gained attention as a method for generating accurate, very detailed city models [15][16][17]. With some limitations, 2D GIS data can also be used to create simple three-dimensional city models for computer-based systems [18,19]. For different application scenarios, photorealistic or thematic visualizations can be made from 3D city models [20].…”
