Systems design for a changing organization has long been in the research agenda of several academic and industrial communities, and still is an open problem. This paper draws on Organizational Semiotics and Actor Network Theory to delineate a method for clarifying and representing the social forces involved in organizational changes. A case study illustrates the approach in which all actors -people, technical devices and other objects -are modelled in the social level, tracing back the norms flow, their sources, enabling to negotiate the change with the appropriate stakeholders.

Conducting Socially Aware and Value Oriented Investigations: a Case Study on the Violence Against Children and Adolescents

In challenging social contexts of technology design, such as those involving fighting the violence against children and adolescents, the consideration of human values is critical, as they influence people's social and cultural lives. Considering values when understanding a social problem is not a trivial activity due to the difficulty of working with abstract concepts, the complexity of people's lives, and the lack of artifacts and recommendations to support designers in this task. Drawing on the Socially Aware Design approach, this paper describes the use of value-oriented artifacts to understand the problem and to identify requirements for the design of a computational solution in this context. As a result, the problem of violence against children is characterized in a socially-aware manner: 58 stakeholders were identified in the problem domain, which led to an analysis of 60 challenges of the violence impact and of 31 proposals of solutions were mapped to face these challenges. Stakeholder’s values in the fight against violence context were identified, which enabled the identification of 43 value-oriented requirements for potential technological solutions for the context.

Part 1: Organisational Semiotics: Theory and ResearchInternational audienceOrganizational Semiotics (OS) is a discipline that supports analyzing and modeling organizations as Information Systems (IS). This paper investigates the use of OS theories in studies published in the last five years, aiming to identify how researchers have been employing the OS theory and the current approaches derived from OS. In this sense, we conducted a systematic review in four scientific databases. Starting with an initial set of 91 papers, we selected 53 for this review. The results suggest almost twenty new modeling approaches using OS artifacts and ideas. Moreover, the number of publications has been increasing and publications have occurred in several different journals and conference proceedings
