Interaction Between the Severely Demented Patient and His Caregiver during Feeding

Abstract: ABSTRACT. A theoretical model for the assessment of interaction between the severely demented patient and his caregiver during feeding is suggested. It is based on literature of impairments in demented patients and interaction. The main concepts of the model are clarity of cues, sensitivity, interpretation, responsiveness and synchrony. The model stresses the fact that when the senile demented patient's communicative competence declines, the caregiver has to compensate for his disability.

“…In order to achieve this subtle cooperation, the people involved must be able to perceive and interpret each other's verbal and non-verbal behaviour. According to Athlin and Norberg (1987), the main responsibility for this cooperation lies with caregivers, whose experiences, educational background and personal beliefs may influence the course of the mealtime.…”

“…A good part of this was realized by nursing professionals, with institutionalized patients, and the most frequent themes were: ethical factors, interpretation of the feeding difficulties and saciety 4 , interventions and description of the feeding problems in a nutritional state. Most of the studies make use of questionnaires directed at health professionals in order to characterize the feeding situation, while few differentiate the phases of dementia and are not directed at swallowing.…”
