Interacting With Competence: A Validation Study of the Self-Efficacy in Intercultural Communication Scale-Short Form

Abstract: Self-Efficacy in Intercultural Communication scale with intercultural effectiveness competencies and speaking and listening selfefficacy constructs used in classroom contexts. Together, this study offers a tool of valid indicators for researchers and practitioners who aim to observe self-efficacy in positive education, intercultural training, or international programs that intersect with language learning and intercultural communication.

“…As depicted in Table 1, mean values for self-efficacy types were relatively low compared to anxiety types, and personality factor scores were highest for Neuroticism and Openness to Experience. Replicating prior studies with the respective psychometric instruments, reliability coefficients were high for all study variables (Apple, 2011;Toyama and Yamazaki, 2018;Kabir and Sponseller, 2020). As shown in with correlation coefficients that were notably higher than those observed for university students in Kabir and Sponseller (2020) [L-SE and SEIC, r(77) = 0.42, p < 0.001; S-SE and SEIC, r(77) = 0.28, p < 0.001], as seen in Table 4.…”

“…Self-efficacy in intercultural communication-Japanese (Peterson et al, 2011; Japanese version by Kabir and Sponseller, 2020) The SEIC-SF is an 8-item measure that summarizes a domain of self-efficacy as it relates to intercultural communication (e.g., sample item, "How well can you communicate in impromptu situations?"). Previous research on the SEIC-SF by Kabir and Sponseller (2020) extended the original work of Peterson et al (2011) by establishing cross-cultural validity and measurement invariance across samples of sojourning English teachers in Japan, Japanese teachers of English, and Japanese university students. A sixpoint Likert scale ranging from 1 ("I definitely cannot do this") to 6 ("I can do this very well") was used, with all points on the scale semantically labeled.…”

“…Therefore, the practice of real Russian life has forced the people to unequivocally speak out in favor of conservatism. Without questioning the choice made in favour of a market economy, private property and entrepreneurship, the voters voted for a strong state to set the "rules of the game" (Kabir & Sponseller, 2020). Such a state, like Hobbes ' Leviathan, must protect the human right to life and legally acquired property by any means.…”

“…Pupil ᾿s self-efficiency covers their professional and personal language goals and depends on motivation to use practical language skills when it is required in a real world. The applied linguistics with interactive pedagogical technologies, first of all -integrated learning, can provide the basis for their communicative interactions, opportunities for changes in the Ego-concept, the development of intercultural communication (Kabir & Sponseller, 2020;Yashima et al, 2004;Wildeman et al, 2021).…”
