The aim of this investigation was to study the influence of maternal effects on the genetic evaluation of sire production in Tabapuã beef cattle. Single and multiple trait analyses were done with adjusted animal weights at 120, 240 and 420 days of age. Antagonism was observed between additive direct and maternal genetic effects, with the maternal effect being higher until weaning. The inclusion of maternal effects in the models removed part of the additive variance only in single trait analyses and resulted in smaller means and standard deviations for the sire breeding values. The use of maternal effect associated with single or multiple traits may affect sire ranking. The contradictory results of the single and multiple trait analyses for additive direct and maternal effects indicate that caution is needed when considering recommendations about the importance of maternal effects in Tabapuã beef cattle.

RESUMO -Avaliou-se a interação genótipo × ambiente em um rebanho da raça Canchim por meio de estimativas de parâmetros genéticos dos pesos à desmama e aos 12 meses de idade, do ganho de peso diário entre essas idades e do desempenho estimado por um índice obtido de componentes principais envolvendo essas três características. O ambiente foi representado por época de nascimento (primeiro e segundo semestres) e os parâmetros genéticos foram obtidos em análises bicaráter (mesma característica nas duas épocas), utilizando-se a metodologia de inferência bayesiana, por meio de amostrador de Gibbs, cujo modelo incluiu os efeitos fixos de sexo, ano e mês de nascimento do animal e idade da vaca ao parto (linear e quadrática) e os efeitos aleatórios de animal e resíduo. Houve evidências de interação genótipo × época de nascimento para as características estudadas, sugerindo que as avaliações genéticas e a seleção dos animais devem ser feitas considerando-se a existência dessa interação.Palavras-chave: bovino Canchim, correlação genética, época de nascimento, herdabilidade, peso A study of the genotype × environment interaction for growth traits in beef cattle using Bayesian inference ABSTRACT -The objective of this study was to evaluate the genotype × environment interaction for weaning and yearling weights, daily weight gain from weaning to 12 months of age and the growth performance in Canchim (5/8 Charolais + 3/8 Zebu) beef cattle estimated by a principal components analysis including those three traits. The environment was defined by season of birth (first and second semesters of the year). Genetic parameters were estimated by bayesian method with the Gibbs sampler using bivariate analyses (considering the trait in each of the two seasons as a different one) and models that included the fixed effects of year and month of birth, sex and age of cow (linear and quadratic) and the random effects of animal and residual. The results suggested that genetic evaluation and selection in Canchim beef cattle for the traits studied should consider the genotype and season of birth interaction.

Depending on the environmental differences among the regions, the phenotypic expression in beef cattle may significantly vary between the progenies of the same sire, and this is an important rule to identify the best animal. Thus, this study was carried out to spatialize environmental factors that may help to compare and discriminate the states of Maranhão, Pará, and Tocantins and also to check for genotype x environment interaction (G x E interaction) in these regions. The environmental variables analyzed were: maximum temperature; minimum temperature; mean temperature; precipitation; normalized difference vegetation index; relative humidity; altitude; and index of temperature and humidity. Records of weaning weight of Nellore cattle raised on pasture were collected between the years of 1997 and 2007. The dataset was constituted of 21.117 animals, progenies of 161 sires. (Co)variance components and breeding values were estimated using the multiple-trait derivative-free restricted maximum likelihood method. Multivariate spatialization revealed clear distinction among the States of Maranhão, Pará, and Tocantins and allowed the identification of important environmental variables for discrimination. The estimate for direct heritability showed moderate magnitudes and were 0.22±0013, 0.26±0.021, and 0.29±0023, for the 2 Cienc. anim. bras., Goiânia, v.18, 1-13, e-39597, 2017Climate espatialization and genotype-environment interaction effects… States of Maranhão, Pará, and Tocantins, respectively. The estimates of correlation between the breeding values, predicted in different States, as well as the genetic correlation for weaning weight showed that sire ranks changed among the States, indicating G x E interaction. There was a variation of the genetic response of the progeny, depending on the sire and on the State. Thus, the G x E interaction should be accounted for in the genetic evaluation of sires and the performance of Nellore cattle under extensive breeding systems in tropical regions of Brazil.Keywords: animal breeding; canonical correlation; cluster; heritability; Zebu. ResumoA expressão fenotípica pode variar significativamente sob diferenças climáticas e deve ser um motivo de preocupação na identificação e seleção de animais superiores no Brasil.
