Abstract. The agility to collaborate in several business networks has become essential for the success of enterprises. The dynamic nature of collaborations and the autonomy of enterprises creates new challenges for the operational computing environment. This paper describes the web-Pilarcos B2B middleware solutions for managing the life-cycle of dynamic business networks in an inter-enterprise environment. The use of B2B middleware moves the management challenges away from the individual enterprise applications to more global infrastructure services, and provides a level of automation into the establishment and maintenance. The middleware services aim for a rigorous level of transparent interoperability support, including awareness of collaboration processes, and collaboration level adaptation to breaches in operation.

Abstract:Modem hospital environments represent complex, distributed, and crossorganisational enterprises with a variety of complex and distributed systems applications. They include a multitude of resources at different places, they have to accommodate real-time requirements, and they have to support rather complicated and, in many cases, unforeseeable business processes. Many processes must strictly follow certain sets of rules, and both process and resource usage have to be dynamically optimized to guarantee the best service to all patients at all times. This paper discusses how state-of-the art agent technology, enriched with expressive policy constraints, can be used to support provision of better quality care for patients and more efficient health service delivery to health professionals. We apply results of our research in multiagent systems and policy modelling to a set of requirements in the e-health domain.

Policy‐driven customization of cross‐organizational features in distributed service systems

SUMMARYIn a cross‐organizational context, software services are provided and consumed by different organizations. Ensuring that the non‐functional requirements of all the involved organizations are satisfied is hard to achieve in such a distributed and heterogeneous environment: the implementation of features, for example, security, is scattered across the services of multiple organizations. In this paper, we present a coordination architecture for flexible and policy‐driven composition of cross‐organizational features in distributed service systems. The underlying approach of this architecture is to specify the features and their composition at a higher level that abstracts the internal implementation mechanisms of the organizations involved. By means of feature composition policies, the organizations specify at a fine‐grained level which features are required and when they have to apply. Driven by these policies, our coordination middleware dynamically integrates the appropriate features throughout the cross‐organizational service composition in a consistent and efficient way. We have validated our architecture in a proof of concept showing limited performance overhead. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
