The short- to long-distance dispersal (SDD and LDD) of propagules is critical for the regeneration of mangrove forests. Mark–recapture experiments are considered to be a good tool for assessing such dispersal patterns. However, dense mangrove roots, exposed mudflats, shallow water, etc. often limit the number of recaptured propagules and their implication studies. Therefore, a combination of hydrodynamic and particle tracking models, together with a mark–recapture experiment, were applied to identify the dispersal behavior of Rhizophora mucronata Lamk. propagules in a coastal lagoon of Setiu Wetlands, Malaysia. The transport trajectories revealed that the dispersal of propagules is leptokurtic, with majority of them confined to very-short-distance dispersal (VSDD; 3–5 m) to SDD (1400 m). While higher obstacle density (e.g., mangrove roots) constrained the propagule dispersal, weaker tidal currents that coupled with less upstream discharge increased their retention time and settlement closer to the point of release. Under this scenario, the chances for propagules to exit from the lagoon mouth and their entry into the open waters for LDD are very limited. These results can explain the abundance of Rhizophora spp. in the northern sector of the Setiu Wetlands and be useful for species-level conservation/management.

Climate change results in weather phenomena such as those that are currently being observed, affecting precipitation, possibly more intensely in the Amazon region. This research is justified by the scarcity of climate risk mitigation measures in the Amazon. Rainfall data from 1992 to 2021 were analyzed, revealing long occurrences of dipole anomalies for consecutive months. Based on the climate indices, the best correlation results occurred in the years with high rainfall, coinciding with the occurrence of negative dipole and of La Niña. Therefore, climate indices can indicate the possible predictive capacity of extreme rainfall events. The results show that the influence of climatic phenomena is more pronounced in the northern region of the Tapajós River Basin.

Como resultado da alteração do padrão de circulação atmosférica causada por fenômenos climáticos, em algumas áreas do Brasil ocorrem secas extremas, em outras, chuvas torrenciais. Tais aspectos permitem inferir a respeito das problemáticas socioambientais e econômicos resultantes destes fenômenos. Diante disto, este trabalho buscou analisar a relação dos eventos El Niño Oscilação Sul (ENOS) com índice de anomalias de chuva (IAC). As séries históricas de precipitação pluviométrica utilizadas foram da estação Santarém (1969 a 2019) e estação Nova Maringá (1984 a 2020), classificando os eventos ENOS dentro destes períodos, através do Índice de Oscilação do Niño (ION). Com isso, observou-se a partir da classificação do IAC, que os fenômenos fortes como extremamente seco e extremamente úmido, coincidiram com a classificação dos fenômenos ENOS de El Niño e La Niña para estação Santarém. Os fenômenos El Niño e La Niña pouco causa efeitos evidentes no Número de dias de chuvas para a estação Maringá. Através do estudo realizado para analisar as variações mensais e anuais das precipitações pluviais através do IAC, mostrou-se que estas ocorrem na maioria dos casos por influência do fenômeno ENOS mais intensos, fazendo chover mais ou menos naquela região. Comparando os resultados encontrados para o sul da bacia (Nova Maringá) e para o norte (Santarém), observa-se que a influência dos eventos ENOS é mais forte para a região norte da bacia Hidrográfica do Rio Tapajós (BHRT).
