Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are a major concern globally affecting societies, companies, and individuals. To address this, a new sensor-based system is presented: the Smart Workwear System, aimed at facilitating preventive measures by supporting risk assessments, work design, and work technique training. The system has a module-based platform that enables flexibility of sensor-type utilization, depending on the specific application. A module of the Smart Workwear System that utilizes haptic feedback for work technique training is further presented and evaluated in simulated mail sorting on sixteen novice participants for its potential to reduce adverse arm movements and postures in repetitive manual handling. Upper-arm postures were recorded, using an inertial measurement unit (IMU), perceived pain/discomfort with the Borg CR10-scale, and user experience with a semi-structured interview. This study shows that the use of haptic feedback for work technique training has the potential to significantly reduce the time in adverse upper-arm postures after short periods of training. The haptic feedback was experienced positive and usable by the participants and was effective in supporting learning of how to improve postures and movements. It is concluded that this type of sensorized system, using haptic feedback training, is promising for the future, especially when organizations are introducing newly employed staff, when teaching ergonomics to employees in physically demanding jobs, and when performing ergonomics interventions.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the inter-rater reliability of a newly developed instrument-TRACK (observaTion woRk demAnds Childcare worK) for observations of ergonomic work demands in childcare work. Two trained raters conducted thirty hours of concurrent observation of fifteen childcare workers in three different day nurseries. Inter-rater reliability of ergonomic work demands was evaluated using Gwet’s Agreement Coefficient (AC1) and interpreted by the Landis and Koch benchmark scale. Twenty ergonomic work demand items were evaluated. Inter-rater reliability was ‘almost perfect’ for nine items (AC1 0.81–1.00), ‘substantial’ for four items (AC1 0.61–0.80), ‘moderate’ for four items (AC1 0.41–0.60), ‘fair’ for two items (AC1 0.21–0.40), and ‘slight’ (AC1 0.00–0.20) for one item. No items had ‘poor’ (AC1 < 0.00) agreement. The instrument is reliable for assessing ergonomic work demands in childcare in real-life settings.

Zusammenfassung Hintergrund Beobachtungsbasierte Methoden zur Gefährdungsbeurteilung physischer Belastungen im Bereich der oberen Extremität können durch subjektive Erfahrungen der Untersuchenden beeinflusst werden. Darüber hinaus ist eine Quantifizierung biomechanischer Belastungen, wie Zeitverläufe von Gelenkwinkeln, Winkelgeschwindigkeiten oder Kräften durch Beobachtungen, schwer möglich. Zur objektiven Quantifizierung von Expositionen im Rahmen von spezifischen Gefährdungsbeurteilungen eignen sich daher vor allem messtechnische Methoden, wobei die Auswahl der entsprechenden Methode herausfordernd sein kann. Zielsetzung Dieser Artikel soll Arbeitsschutzfachleute dabei unterstützen, aus der Bandbreite der unterschiedlichen Verfahren die geeignete messtechnische Methode für eine vorliegende Expositionssituation zu identifizieren. Methoden Ausgehend von einer Literaturübersicht wurden Messmethoden für die obere Extremität in Anlehnung an ein etabliertes Kategoriensystem hinsichtlich ihrer Komplexität klassifiziert. Zusätzlich werden Anwendungsbeispiele für alle Kategorien skizziert. Ergebnisse Dieser Artikel liefert eine Übersicht und Klassifizierung von unterschiedlichen messtechnischen Erfassungs- und Bewertungsmethoden arbeitsbezogener Muskel-Skelett-Belastungen, die in 3 Kategorien von einfach bis komplex eingeteilt werden. Diskussion Vereinfachte Sensorik in Kombination mit spezifischen Bewertungsansätzen kann zukünftig die objektive Gefährdungsbeurteilung physischer Belastungen unterstützen.
