Abstract. Eastern Sicily is affected by earthquakes and tsunamis of local and remote origin, which is known through numerous historical chronicles. Recent studies have put emphasis on the role of submarine landslides as the direct cause of the main local tsunamis, envisaging that earthquakes (in 1693 and 1908) did produce a tsunami, but also that they triggered mass failures that were able to generate an even larger tsunami. The debate is still open, and though no general consensus has been found among scientists so far, this research had the merit to attract attention on possible generation of tsunamis by landslides off Sicily. In this paper we investigate the tsunami potential of mass failures along one sector of the Hyblean-Malta Escarpment (HME). facing Augusta. The HME is the main offshore geological structure of the region running almost parallel to the coast, off eastern Sicily. Here, bottom morphology and slope steepness favour soil failures. In our work we study slope stability under seismic load along a number of HME transects by using the Minimun Lithostatic Deviation (MLD) method, which is based on the limit-equilibrium theory. The main goal is to identify sectors of the HME that could be unstable under the effect of realistic earthquakes. We estimate the possible landslide volume and use it as input for numerical codes to simulate the landslide motion and the consequent tsunami. This is an important step for the assessment of the tsunami hazard in eastern Sicily and for local tsunami mitigation policies. It is also important in view of tsunami warning system since it can help to identify the minimum earthquake magnitude capable of triggering destructive tsunamis induced by landslides, and therefore to set up appropriate knowledge-based criteria to launch alert to the population.

ResumenSe han relocalizado 113 eventos de la serie sísmica de Lorca, con datos de redes sísmicas temporales y permanentes, mediante el algoritmo de la doble diferencia. Las réplicas de los primeros días se distribuyen espacialmente con una dimensión de unos 5 km de largo, con rumbo NE-SW, y situadas al suroeste del evento principal, lo que sugiere una propagación de la ruptura hacia el SW, a lo largo de la falla de Alhama de Murcia. Se ha obtenido un mecanismo similar para los tres sismos mayores, con un fallamiento oblicuo, predominantemente inverso y se han estimado los parámetros de la fuente de estos tres terremotos Se ha simulado el movimiento horizontal del suelo en 11 puntos de Lorca cuya estructura local es conocida por experimentos de SPAC. Los valores obtenidos de una serie de parámetros del movimiento del suelo (PGA, PGV, AI, CAV, SI, SA y SV) son mayores en los 11 puntos que los de la estación LOR y también mayores que los valores medios obtenidos para sismos euro-mediterráneos de intensidad local VIII (EMS). Sin embargo, los S D son excepcionalmente cortos y menores que los valores de referencia. Los valores más altos de los espectros de respuesta de aceleración y de velocidad se dan para periodos menores de 0.7 s, con máximos de aceleración espectral en 0.15 s y de velocidad en 0.5 s. El espectro de energía de entrada está bien relacionado con la destructividad de las sacudidas sísmicas en cada lugar. Velocidades equivalentes > 60 cm/s se han obtenido en casi todos los sitios y > 100 cm/s (para periodos 0.3-0.6 s) en algunos. Los factores de cercanía y las características del mecanismo focal y de la respuesta del terreno explican los valores altos obtenidos de parámetros del movimiento del suelo en Lorca y muestran la gran influencia de la fuente y del sitio en las características del movimiento fuerte en las cercanías de la ruptura. Abstract. This paper presents the development of a nonparametric forecast model based on artificial neural networks for the direct assessment of Arias Intensity corresponding to a historic earthquake using seismic intensity data. The neural models allow complex and nonlinear behaviour to be tracked. Application of this methodology on earthquakes with known instrumental data from Greece, showed that the artificial neural network forecast model have excellent data synthesis capability.
