Intensity Analysis of Hartmann-Shack Images in Cataractous, Keratoconic, and Normal Eyes to Investigate Light Scattering

Abstract: The two methods introduced here successfully distinguished cataractous eyes from normal and keratoconic eyes. After the results were analyzed by a discriminant analysis, the separation of the three categories proved to be excellent.

“…8 Light scattering due to small water particles is caused by Mie scattering that propagates backward and forward. 15 The backward light scattering by the small water aggregates can be observed as surface light scattering. Further analysis of the extracted IOL is required to assess the etiology.…”

“…Forward light scattering predominantly contributes to the contrast sensitivity and visual acuity. 18 Evaluation of forward scattering using a Hartmann-Shack wavefront analyzer 15,18 or a double-pass optical analyzer 19 is required. The exclusion criteria used to analyze the change in visual acuity is also a limitation.…”

“…The magnitude of increased wavefront aberration associated with TBU, as quantified by the RMS of the modal wavefront, is consistent with the literature. 1,4,6-9,39 The modal WFE map is the sum of two other maps (LOA, HOA) displayed in the third and fourth rows. The VHOA map displayed in the fifth row is the difference between the zonal and modal maps.…”

“…The source of the light scattering is small particles ofwhich size is about one gm [21]. But we found very narrow angle scattering from cataractous eyes [22]. Optical characteristics to cause this narrow angle scattering may be related to the different PCs ofcataractous eyes from those ofnormal eyes.…”
