Th e economic and environmental benefi ts of including grain legumes in crop rotations may tempt farmers to grow them more frequently than recommended, resulting in potential changes to soil chemical, physical, and biological properties. We investigated the eff ects of increasing the frequency of fi eld pea (Pisum sativum L.) (P) in a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) (W)-based cropping system on soil microbial biomass C (MBC), β-glucosidase enzyme activity, bacterial diversity, and populations of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viceae in the last 3 yr of a 13-yr fi eld study. Th e treatments consisted of three rotations: P-P, W-P, and W-W-P. Fertilizer N at 5, 20, and 40 kg N ha -1 was applied to pea in P-P and W-P rotations to examine the role of starter N. Soil MBC and diversity were lower in P-P than pea rotated with wheat, presumably due to reduced amounts and diversity of C inputs under P-P. Th ese reductions in soil MBC and diversity probably further reduced fi eld pea growth and grain yields through reduced nutrient cycling. In fi eld pea, β-glucosidase activity increased with increasing N, suggesting that N was limiting the capacity of soil microorganisms to recycle nutrients from organic materials (including crop residues). Populations of soil rhizobia were not aff ected by treatment. Wheat grown aft er pea in the 3-yr W-W-P rotation had greater MBC and β-glucosidase activity than that in the W-P rotation, indicating the importance of long rotations. Th erefore, pea monoculture reduced soil microbial quality, with adverse eff ects on nutrient cycling.

Iron Bioavailability in Low Phytate Pea

Field pea (Pisum sativum L.) seeds have high nutritional value but also contain phytate which can inhibit the absorption and utilization of nutrients. Phytate is the main storage form of phosphorus in the seeds but chelates Fe, Zn and some other micronutrients and is not well digested by monogastrics. Peas with pigmented seed coats contain polyphenols which also have anti-nutritional properties. To increase the nutritional value of field pea seeds, two low phytate lines (1-150-81 and 1-2347-144) containing higher inorganic phosphorus concentration (IN-P) and lower phytate-phosphorus concentration (PA-P) than the normal phytate varieties were developed from CDC Bronco in previous research. The objectives of this research were 1) to determine the effect of genotype and environment on iron bioavailability in a set of five pea varieties differing in phytate concentration and iron concentration using in vitro digestion/Caco-2 cell culture bioassay; 2) to determine the effect of seed coats on iron bioavailability by testing whole seeds compared to dehulled seeds in varieties differing in seed coat pigmentation using in vitro digestion/Caco-2 cell culture bioassay; 3) to determine the inheritance of iron bioavailability in field pea by evaluating recombinant inbred lines differing in phytate concentration using in vitro digestion/Caco-2 cell culture bioassay; 4) to determine the effects of pea with the low phytate trait on body weight and hemoglobin concentration of chickens. Iron concentration (FECON) did not differ significantly between normal and low phytate varieties. Iron bioavailability (FEBIO) of the two low-phytate lines was 1.4 to 1.9 times higher than that of the three normal phytate varieties, and growing environment also had a significant effect on FEBIO. Peas with pigmented seed coats contained 7 times lower FEBIO than peas with non-pigmented seed coat. The removal of the seed coat increased the FEBIO in peas with pigmented seed coat 5 to 6 times. From previous research on PR-15 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) which were developed from a cross between low phytate line 1-2347-144 and a normal phytate variety CDC Meadow, it was found that PA-P was controlled by a single gene. FEBIO, in this study, was also found to follow a bimodal frequency distribution, characteristic of single gene iii control, and it was highly correlated with PA-P in the PR-15 lines. In vivo studies were used to evaluate iron absorption of chickens fed with low and normal phytate pea diets. The diets containing the low-phytate pea lines had no significant effect on chicken body weight and hemoglobin level, compared with the diets containing normal phytate pea varieties. An unexpected high FECON was discovered in the diets that was traced to the ingredients of limestone and dicalcium-phosphate which likely affected the experimental results.iv

Economics of pulse crop frequency and sequence in a wheat‐based rotation

Pulse crops (PC) have become an essential part of cropping systems in the northern Great Plains. Despite agronomic benefits of rotating pulses with cereal crops, knowledge of the economics of PC frequency and sequence in a rotation is limited. A field study was conducted from 2010 to 2014 at three locations in western Canada to evaluate the effects of rotating a cereal crop with a range of PC at different frequencies and sequences on the economic returns and risk of both the entire rotation and each individual crop. Crops in rotation included spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) (W), field pea (Pisum sativum L.) (P), chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) (C), lentil (Lens culinaris Medik) (L), and Oriental mustard (Brassica juncea L.) (M). Thirteen 4-yr-cycle crop rotation treatments, along with a continuous wheat treatment as a baseline, were included. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replicates at each site-year. The net revenue (NR) was defined as the income remaining after paying all monetary, land and ownership, and labor costs. Crop rotation had a significant effect on average annual NR. The most profitable rotations were L-L-L-W and P-M-L-W. These rotations provided CAN$330 and $235 yr -1 ha -1 higher NR, respectively, than the baseline, and were most preferable by risk-averse producers. The economic ranking of the rotations remained the same with different crop price scenarios.
