Intensification of Field Pea Production: Impact on Agronomic Performance

Abstract: Including grain‐legumes in cropping systems contributes to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and enhances agronomic and economic performance of cropping systems. The objective was to examine the potential for increasing the frequency of field pea (Pisum sativum L.) (FP) in a spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) (W)‐based cropping system. Three crop rotations, continuous pea (C‐Pea), W‐FP, and W‐W‐FP, were evaluated over a 10‐yr period (1998–2007) at Indian Head, SK. During the FPphase of C‐Pea and W‐FP, t… Show more

“…Details about the site, treatments, plot layout, and crop management have been previously described by Lafond et al (2011). Here we report on this ongoing study for the cumulative period 1995 to 2007 at Indian Head, SK (50°32′ N, 103°39′ W) using soil samples collected in 2005, 2006, and 2007.…”

“…They are averaged across years because years were different environments in which the other factors were tested. This tabulation of data will facilitate comparison with the crop yield data that were tabulated similarly in Lafond et al (2011). Data for specific effects, including years, are given below.…”

“…Meanwhile, green pea must have good natural green color in order to obtain highest grades and premium prices. The split or canned dry field pea is used directly in food markets, and the pea protein and starch are widely used in the food industry (Black et al, 2006;Lafond et al, 2011). Field pea is also used in swine and poultry feed markets, and a smaller amount is used as birdseed or in forage markets.…”
