“…The influence of sea breezes on the hydrodynamics has been reported widely for coastal zones and enclosed bays (e.g. Hunter et al, 2007;Orfila et al, 2005;and Zytasev et al, 2010). In particular, Fontán et al (2009) identified a notable influence of sea breeze, on flows, offshore of Pasaia Bay (located also in the southeastern Bay of Biscay, some 75 km to the east of Bilbao harbour), in comparison to tidal currents.…”

“…The clonal population of Pocillopora at ISLG is situated on a narrow (20 m wide) shelf along the protected leeward side of a small island (Gaviota Island) and is rarely exposed to disturbances from storm surges. Under normal conditions, water currents move slowly back and forth along the shore and are influenced by tidal direction (Zaytsev et al 2010). However, hurricanes periodically enter La Paz Bay from the southwest (usually one hurricane, or major storm, every 2 years; National Hurricane Center), and on these occasions ISLG is exposed to intense wave energy that damages and fragments colonies (pers obs).…”

“…Here, the research undertaken by Hyder et al (2002), Mihanović et al (2009) and Zaytsev et al (2010) is of special interest. These investigators concluded that the radiational tides induce surface-intensified diurnal and semidiurnal variability, in coastal water circulation.…”
