. Significance Spectral imaging, which includes hyperspectral and multispectral imaging, can provide images in numerous wavelength bands within and beyond the visible light spectrum. Emerging technologies that enable compact, portable spectral imaging cameras can facilitate new applications in biomedical imaging. Aim With this review paper, researchers will (1) understand the technological trends of upcoming spectral cameras, (2) understand new specific applications that portable spectral imaging unlocked, and (3) evaluate proper spectral imaging systems for their specific applications. Approach We performed a comprehensive literature review in three databases (Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science). We included only fully realized systems with definable dimensions. To best accommodate many different definitions of “compact,” we included a table of dimensions and weights for systems that met our definition. Results There is a wide variety of contributions from industry, academic, and hobbyist spaces. A variety of new engineering approaches, such as Fabry–Perot interferometers, spectrally resolved detector array (mosaic array), microelectro-mechanical systems, 3D printing, light-emitting diodes, and smartphones, were used in the construction of compact spectral imaging cameras. In bioimaging applications, these compact devices were used for in vivo and ex vivo diagnosis and surgical settings. Conclusions Compact and ultracompact spectral imagers are the future of spectral imaging systems. Researchers in the bioimaging fields are building systems that are low-cost, fast in acquisition time, and mobile enough to be handheld.

Repairing and maintaining the Fleet have been long‐standing problems for the Navy. In recent years, decreasing resources and Fleet assets have made repair and maintenance an even more difficult problem. In response to these pressures, Navy personnel have been seeking new methods to reduce overall maintenance costs. One such approach has been to instrument ships during operation with resistance strain gage technology in order to provide information for estimating the structural health of ship hulls. To date, a limited number of naval ships have been instrumented in this way, and have collected data to validate computer models that predict damage accumulation over the expected service life of the vessel (Adamchak 1984; Sikora 1983). The Navy is currently developing a new ship structural health monitoring system based on fiber optic technology. Application of this new health monitoring system to U.S. Navy vessels will improve maintenance programs by predicting need‐based maintenance schedules, thereby eliminating costly cyclic preventative maintenance schedules. This new system will also increase operational availability and ship survivability by providing ship operators real‐time information concerning the state of the ship structure. This paper describes the operational capabilities of this new system and recent test results on large‐scale naval structures including a U.S. Navy Landing Platform Dock 17 (LPD 17) ship propeller.

Critical dimension (CD) uniformity has recently become increasing essential with miniaturization in semiconductor production. For high-volume manufacturing, high-speed in-wafer uniformity inspection is inevitable. The conventional optical critical dimension (OCD) spectroscopy has low resolution issue because of the large spot size. Consequently, line-scan hyperspectral imaging (LSHI) is presented by Samsung Electronics in 2022. Compared with the OCD, the LSHI has advantages of high throughput, high spatial and spectral resolution, and large field of view. The LSHI can improve the throughput of OCD significantly and provide high-resolution spatial and spectral information. In this study, the optical design of the refractive imaging spectrometer based on the ruled reflection grating is presented. Most imaging spectrometers, such as Czerny-Turner or Ebert-Fastie setup, are off-axis reflective configuration. However, the performance is limited by serious astigmatism and smaller numerical aperture. The astigmatism leads to low spatial and spectral resolution, and the smaller numerical aperture requires more exposure time, which results in low throughput. Therefore, the refractive type using lens combinations for imaging spectrometers can eliminate aberrations effectively and increase numerical aperture significantly. In this study, the numerical aperture is designed as f/2.4, and the slit length is 14 mm for high throughput. The high spatial and spectral resolution is accomplished by optimizing lens combinations from 400 nm to 800 nm spectral region.
