Intelligent engine control using an adaptive critic

Abstract: Neural networks (NNs) have been successfully used for implementing control architectures for different applications. In this paper, we examine NN augmented intelligent control of a turbo-fan engine toward the goal of minimizing a performance measure on-line. This architecture utilizes an adaptive critic to estimate the engine performance, which is then used to train an NN demand generator for minimizing the performance measure. The present architecture is implemented on a nonlinear model that was provided by G… Show more

“…Most subsystems associated with UAV, as well as the turbojet engine, can be viewed as nonlinear systems with strong variability [22,23]. The neural network (NN) has been recognized as an efficient means for nonlinear time-varying controller design because of its learning ability.…”

“…Ideally, all AC designs use a reinforcement learning technique, where the controller optimizes certain attributes of the system based on the response of the system to a control action and the action generated by the controller itself [6]. There are other control structures that use critic-actor schemes can be found in [7]- [9].…”
