Integrity Management of Offshore Structures With Emphasis on Design for Structural Damage Tolerance

Abstract: Based on relevant accident experiences with oil and gas platforms, structural integrity management of offshore structures is briefly outlined, including adequate design criteria, fabrication and operational procedures, as well as life cycle quality assurance and control. The focus is on developing an operational design standard for accidental collapse limit states to ensure robustness or damage tolerance. The focus is to ensure an acceptable safety level against progressive failure leading to total loss in vie… Show more

“…By considering the probability, consequences, and cost of operational or maintenance activities, risk-based inspection frameworks enable optimal selection and prioritisation of inspection and maintenance activities [10]. These frameworks use structural reliability methods and Bayesian reliability methods to establish fatigue design criteria and update inspection plans during operation [31]. RBI involves prioritising inspections based on the level of risk associated with each subsea asset, thus reducing the need for systematic periodic inspections where they are unnecessary.…”

“…The true strain and stress relation was utilized to simulate a plate punching experiment until fracture using the finite element model (FEM). Similarly, Storheim and Amdahl [20] surveyed the effect of various features of the complete stress-strain curve on the predicted outcome of a collision simulation. Nonlinear finite element analysis simulations of a full-scale impact scenario revealed that the slope of the stress-strain curve determined how strains localized, and thereby when and where fracture propagated.…”

“…Moan 34 described the structural integrity management of oil and gas platforms such as operational procedures, fabrication quality, design criteria, quality assurance in accordance with various accident events with offshore structures. The attention was paid to development of an operational design standard for ALS to make sure the damage tolerance and robustness.…”
