Integration of Thermal Treatment and Extrusion by Compounding for Processing Various Wastes for Energy Applications

Abstract: Waste generation is increasing, and a significant portion of the wastes is being landfilled. Torrefaction of such wastes to produce clean fuels is one of the potential solutions. This paper studied torrefaction of mixed fiber–plastic wastes at 300 °C in an integrated torrefaction–extrusion screw reactor with a throughput of up to 70 kg/h. The study experimentally measured the thermomechanical properties of the torrefaction–extrusion process and the pellets produced. The study presents the results for thermal d… Show more

“…In this paper, the researchers from RTI International report the results of a parametric study at temperatures between 433 and 581 °C in the presence of γ-Al 2 O 3 with loblolly pine as feedstock and thoroughly characterized the resulting liquid products. Kolapkar et al 5 from the Michigan Technological University describe a novel design of an integrated thermal treatment and extrusion for the processing of various waste streams to produce pellets. More specifically, this paper reports the torrefaction of mixed fiber−plastic wastes at 300 °C in a pilot-scale system with a throughput capacity of 70 kg/h.…”
