Torrefaction of bark, a common forestry and wood processing residue, was carried out by using a twin-screw extrusion reactor to produce solid biofuels and collect condensable compounds. Unlike conventional torrefaction, this work was carried out under heterodox conditions with temperatures between 275 and 375 °C and retention times of less than 7 min. The effect of key variables, such as temperature, screw rotation speed, and screw design, on the properties and distribution of solid and liquid products was analyzed. Similar to conventional torrefaction, both weight loss and heating values of products are positively correlated to the treatment severity when the torrefaction is conducted with the same screw design. Applying higher temperatures (350 °C and above) drastically increased the yields of biochemicals. For 500 g of feedstock, 280 mg of furfural was produced under 350 °C for ∼5 min, and the yields of phenols and guaiacol reached 400 and 100 mg, respectively, at 375 °C. Applying shear damage by changing the design of the screws was effective in further improving the torrefaction performance, as indicated by the distribution of products and energy content of the obtained biochar, but the yields of biochemicals decreased, presumably because the adsorption of chemicals was enhanced. This study recommends applying high temperature and a short reaction time as an approach to increase the treatment capacity of torrefaction equipment and the yields of biochemicals.

The appropriate use of forest biomass can support the transition to a society with clean and renewable energy. In this context, the research aimed to evaluate the waste biomass from Tectona grandis L.f. for energy purposes. Seven teak wood waste types were used, accessible from the harvesting stage to wood processing. Physical attributes (moisture and basic density) and proximate analysis (volatile materials, ashes, and fixed carbon content) were evaluated, which were used to estimate the energy attributes (higher, lower, and net heating value and energy density). It was found that most waste components had moisture content averages below 30% and did not differentiate statistically. For the basic density, values varied between 366 and 519 kg.m-3. Proximate analysis and energetic attributes of the teak wastes support its feasibility for bioenergy use, focused on trimmings and thin logs. It was concluded that teak waste has the potential for energy purposes if its specific characteristics are considered and appropriate ways of use and conversion are chosen.

The use of biomass is vital in reducing the negative effects of rising fossil fuel consumption. Given its quantity and diversity, forest biomass has garnered a lot of interest among the many kinds of biomass. This study evaluates the various strategies for transforming woody waste into usable biofuels. Carbon dioxide emissions from traditional energy generation systems could be mitigated through the direct utilization of forest biomass. Low energy conversion rates, as well as soot emissions and residues, are some of the problems that come up when directly using forest biomass. The sustainability of direct energy generation from forest biomass is also seriously threatened by the lack of constant access to biomass. Co-combustion with coal and pelletizing biomass is two solutions proposed for this issue. Co-combustion of forest biomass with coal has the potential to lower the process's emissions of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfides. This article reviews and discusses the biochemical and thermochemical mechanisms that can transform forest biomass into a variety of liquid and gaseous biofuels. Future research using cutting-edge sustainability assessment tools like life cycle assessment, exergy, etc. should investigate the sustainability of forest biomass conversion processes to bioenergy further.
