Integration of Interactive CFD Simulations with AR and VR for Educational Use in CRE

Abstract: Engineering simulations have since long been considered an imperative design and analysis tool for chemical reaction engineering (CRE). Notably, reactor and process design are domains in which multiphysics computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are applied to understand phenomena that are difficult, time-consuming or expensive to be explored with experiments. On the other hand, advanced post-processing methods and virtual reality can enable high-quality educational content with engineering simulations.… Show more

“…Therefore, current data processing pipelines cannot be readily replicated to develop similar environments. In this study we will pursue a recently published methodology which proposes a comprehensive scheme to integrate any CFD simulation data with AR/VR by promoting an extract-based data processing approach (Solmaz and Van Gerven, 2020).…”

“…Re-processing of a text file to generate visual representations in a game engine is not an efficient manner of integration due to redundant re-processing of extracted data. Instead, extract-based visual representations 3D file format can be exported and processed which only requires exchanges between compatible file formats (Solmaz and Van Gerven, 2020). Fig.…”

“…Engineering students benefit from virtual laboratories, simulation control assessments, and remote physics experiments as part of VR's educational initiatives. By enabling interactive operation of the virtual model, both the instructor and the learner can observe the tangible development of the project as well as the advancement of architectural tasks that are intrinsic to it (Solmaz & Gerven, 2020). Hence, incorporating VR technology into the teaching process introduces a novel paradigm to the field of engineering education (Duning, 1987).…”

“…The communication platform empowers the participants, inclusive of a student, teacher, or any industry professional, to exchange data concerning a specific domain and authorizes interaction and collaboration in the learning process. Peeking in today's time, where VR technology and 3D models are profusely incorporated as an assisting method for lecturers and students [2]. The application of virtual instructional models to support civil engineering education includes classroom education and e-learning [3].…”
