Integration of AdaptiSPECT: a small-animal adaptive SPECT imaging system

Abstract: AdaptiSPECT is a pre-clinical adaptive SPECT imaging system under final development at the Center for Gamma-ray Imaging. The system incorporates multiple adaptive features: an adaptive aperture, 16 detectors mounted on translational stages, and the ability to switch between a non-multiplexed and a multiplexed imaging configuration. In this paper, we review the design of AdaptiSPECT and its adaptive features. We then describe the on-going integration of the imaging system.

“…The back-end system has been ported to the modern PCI-E bus. [37] The control software operates all 16 cameras on a single CPU outfitted with a Tesla GPU card. We have implemented real-time GPU-powered ML estimation of event positioning based on our contracting-grid algorithm [38] such that a live display of all 16 projections are a routine part of the user interface, even though the list-mode acquisition is preserving all measured signals at full precision in accordance with the super-list-mode, or photon-processing , concept.…”

“…This lead to imprecise pinhole placement, as well as surface imperfections. We have proposed a new manufacturing technique 5 utilizing conventionally machined parts, but incorporating tungsten inserts created using additive manufacturing. We implemented this technique in 3 steps: first we manufactured the high-magnification part of the collimator.…”

“…The usage of pinhole SPECT systems has risen as the need for high-resolution preclinical imaging of small animals has grown. 1,2 In pinhole SPECT, the system resolution is a function of the object distance, detector distance, detector resolution, and pinhole radius. While reducing the pinhole radius results in a linear improvement in the spatial resolution, the sensitivity of the system decreases quadratically.…”
