Integrating the traditional and the modern conflict management strategies in Nigeria

Abstract: The study examines the modalities for integrating traditional and modern conflict management strategies in Nigeria using an analysis of relevant documents as well as Black's Social Control Theory and Thomas-Kilmann's Model of Conflict Management. The successful amalgamation of diverse groups has radically shifted from being a platform for peaceful coexistence to an arena of violent conflicts due to the matrix of social inequality and the state attempts to undermine the power of traditional social control syste… Show more

“…Conversely, the CMM argues that strategic ambitions that are very likely to centre on a two dimensional matrix (of cooperation and assertiveness), when merged with collaboration could result in five principal styles in the management of conflicts, namely: avoidance, compromise, collaboration, competition and accommodation. These theoretical insights are broadly in line with the conflict management literature (Borg, 1992; Volkema and Bergmann, 1995; Akinwale, 2010; Asongu and Kodila-Tedika, 2017). Social media provides the platforms which underpin the conflict management and social control theories herein discussed.…”

“…In accordance with the extant literature on terrorism (see Asongu et al, 2015;Efobi et al, 2015), there are two main theories substantiated by Akinwale (2010) which support this line of inquiry, notably: the conflict management model (CMM) of Thomas-Kilman (1992) and the social control theory (SCT) of Black (1990). On the one hand, within the CMM framework, intentions that are strategic in nature are very likely to rotate around a matrix defined by two factors (of cooperation and assertiveness), which when combined with collaboration yields five fundamental conflict management styles, namely: accommodation, competition, collaboration, compromise and avoidance.…”

“…Some of the conflict resolution mechanisms are articulated by the Social Control Theory of Black and Conflict Management Model of Thomas‐Kilman. These theoretical underpinnings which are documented by Akinwale (, p. 125) have motivated recent literature on conflict resolution, notably on the fight against: political instability and non‐violence (Asongu and Nwachukwu, ) and terrorism (Asongu et al ., ).…”
