Integrating S-ERP systems and lean manufacturing practices to improve sustainability performance: an institutional theory perspective

Abstract: PurposeThis paper aims to investigate the impact of integrating Sustainable Enterprise Resource Planning (S-ERP) systems and lean manufacturing (LM) practices on sustainability performance, especially in Egypt as an emerging country.Design/methodology/approachThe authors carried out an experimental study with a sample of 144 professional accountants of MPA, MBA and DBA students at two of the top universities in Egypt.FindingsThe results provide significant evidence that the integration of S-ERP systems and LM … Show more

“…Despite many studies highlighting the opportunity to integrate sustainable modules in ERP systems (Alsaid, 2022;Chofreh et al, 2020), only a few studies were developed about the specific impacts caused by the adoption of S-ERP in sustainability reporting processes (Pei & Vasarhelyi, 2020;Seele, 2016). In detail, the main references about S-ERP were developed by academics to explore the interlinkages between sustainable performance and digitalization (Abobakr et al, 2022;Chofreh et al, 2020). This paper aims to advance the scientific knowledge about sustainability reporting quality by using a fuzzy expert system (FES).…”

“…Lean Manufacturing has been proposed as a solution to the various existing production chains in the market because each tool helps to eliminate one of the eight wastes: [7]. (1) defects, when something goes wrong; (2) overproduction, doing more than is required; (3) wait, wait for something to happen; (4) not using the talent of the staff; (5) transportation; (6) inventories, product without continuous flow; (7) movement, that the operator moves from his workstation; (8) extra-processing [13,14]. On the other hand, the milk processing industry presents a series of difficulties, some such as surplus milk, inefficient production systems, reprocessing, food waste and contamination, acid, and pH measurement errors.…”

“…This implies that all members of the chain come together with the aim of achieving specific goals related to economic performance, environmental protection, and social development [6]. Previous studies emphasize that LM practices play a crucial role in promoting business sustainability by reducing energy consumption, emissions, water consumption, and environmental waste [1]. These practices also contribute to improving the well-being of the workforce, as well as the financial and operational performance of companies.…”
