Integrating risk profiles for disease progression in the treatment choice for patients with lower urinary tract symptoms/benign prostatic hyperplasia: a combined analysis of external evidence and clinical expertise

Abstract: The RAND appropriateness method was used to explore the relevance of risk factors for disease progression in the treatment choice for patients with lower urinary tract symptoms/benign prostatic hyperplasia (LUTS/BPH). A total of, 12 international experts assessed the appropriateness of various treatments for 243 risk profiles. Highest appropriateness rates were found for a 1 -adrenoceptor antagonists (68% of profiles) and combination therapy (46%). A large prostate volume was the dominant argument in favour of… Show more

“…In this study, it also became apparent that the symptom nocturia was a prevalent and essential part of LUTS. The results of this German study were in line with findings from other epidemiological studies across Europe and elsewhere [12][13][14]. Calculated numbers indicate for Germany and all Western countries that there will be a relevant increase of men seeking for professional help due to LUTS in general and nocturia in particular [11].…”

“…We therefore hypothesized that 5ARI therapy could increase TGFBRII protein expression in BPH tissue. As 5ARI therapy was previously proven to have an effect on prostate volume and on postoperative bleeding in patients operated for BPH [1,20,21], we were not surprised to observe that 5ARI therapy could modify the level of a growth factor such as TGFBRII within BPH tissue.…”
