Integrating GIS and expert judgment in a multi-criteria analysis to map and develop a habitat suitability index: A case study of large mammals on the Malayan Peninsula

Abstract: Many habitat patches in tropical landscapes have become less suitable for wildlife due to an increase in anthropogenic disturbances. An index of habitat suitability based on the ecological factors that collectively determine the suitability of an organism's habitat is important for conservation planning. However, a widely accepted and comprehensive multicriteria habitat suitability index for umbrella species is still lacking, particularly in areas where information related to the biology and ecology of the spe… Show more

“…Their members consisted of officers from Fisheries and Agriculture Agency of the Depok Area, Environmental Protection Local Agency of the Depok Area, the Environmental Protection Agency of West Java Region, and also some professionals. The judgments from them have been used to obtain criteria weights when there is a lack of the required data (Reza et al 2013). They were asked to rank the priority values according to their experiences using a ratio scale and verbal judgments of preference which requires no units in the comparison (Kainulainen et al 2009; Table 3).…”

“…These approaches are frequently combined, such that consultation leads to a metric that reflects ecosystem quality, in a way that conforms to the views of stakeholders and the scientific literature (Geneletti ; Reza et al. ). The process of metric construction often involves the delineation of a benchmark for the ecosystem that defines the highest conceivable quality.…”

“…We conducted an analysis of landscape connectivity by integrating methods of graph-based habitat availability (reachability) metrics and least-cost path matrices Ziólkowska et al, 2012), that allow the identification of key nodes providing connectivity. This is a valuable contribution for forest management tools, especially when the alterations of human disturbances to specific patches rendering some unsuitable, or reducing their ability to provide appropriate habitats for wildlife, are considered (Reza et al, 2013). In this way, forests managers and land planners can identify where management and conservation efforts should be concentrated and prioritized.…”
