Aesthetic value is an important factor that should be considered in lake environments. However, there is a lack of research examining and undertaking investigation of the aesthetic value of multifunctional lake ecosystems. There are two major purposes for this study: (1) to define and investigate the important perceived attributes related to the aesthetic value of multifunctional lakes using a video-questionnaire method and (2) to provide some suggestions for the further development of a visual quality index facilitating decision making in management and policies. An enhanced visual quality method was used in this study to record the conditions of the multifunctional lakes in each location in the study area. The findings of the study defined water color and clarity, percentage of water hyacinth, types of debris, percentage of debris, and facilities and land values as the important attributes related to aesthetic value in multifunctional lakes. In summary, the perceived attributes in the visual ecology criteria indicated more significant relationships with the functional morphology criteria than the financial profitability criteria. The results showed that the video-questionnaire method used in this study is efficient, easy to use, and understandable in terms of identifying and measuring aesthetic value in relation to perceptions of perceived attributes.
Due to a lack of the related data, there were no simple water indexes available for indicating water quality. Motivated by the fact that many lakes and reservoirs in Indonesia have been polluted because of aquacultural activity, this paper proposed a Water Quality Index, called the Aquaculture Water Quality Index (AWQI), and presented the development of practical tool to aid the development of aquaculture in Indonesia. Specific purposes included: (a) providing a brief summary of the assessment results of the existing WQI; (b) developing the AWQI method for applying in an aquacultural context; (c) implementing the AWQI method in Depok Area (Indonesia) as study area. An AHP method was also processed to define the weights of selected water quality parameters: DO, ammonia, pH, and fecal coliform. The AWQI had several features: (a) a low-cost water quality monitoring program that could be used by developing countries; (b) a useful tool for water resource agencies, especially for local agencies, to manage waterbodies and to raise public awareness of water pollution for its data, as its data could be easily understood and interpreted.
The relationship between land use and water quality status is complex and likely to be sitespecific, and more work is needed for it to be clearly quantified. Therefore, the main objective of this paper was thus to identify and investigate status of waterbodies (lakes and rivers) by using appropriate predictive index assessment tool coupled with the offered Adaptive Co-Management (ACM) methodology towards sustainability of water quality and ecology in Indonesia. We then present a comprehensive assessment as baseline information to describe the existing condition of waterbody status in study area. The results indicated that the basic requirements of predictive index assessment tool, expressed as indicator: criteria and attributes, are use-specific or targeted to the protection of the watershed and waterbodies uses among a number of land use policies. In some situations, even stricter requirements and policies are necessary to achieve sustainability of water quality and ecology in Indonesia. 2
