Integrating ethics in design through the value-sensitive design approach

Abstract: The Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) has declared that to achieve accredited status, 'engineering programs must demonstrate that their graduates have an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.' Many engineering professors struggle to integrate this required ethics instruction in technical classes and projects because of the lack of a formalized ethics-in-design approach. However, one methodology developed in human-computer interaction research, the Value-Sensitive Desi… Show more

“…There is published work in this area: Cummings [21] describes a VSD case study (part of a proposed engineering curriculum) of the hypothetical development of a command and control supervisory interface for a military cruise missile. The conceptual analysis is built around the value of human welfare, which is already often seen in VSD work -but here drawing on different philosophical traditions, namely the theory of just war, and the principles of proportionality and of discrimination.…”

“…In addition, the VSD methodology has been acknowledged and employed by other researchers who have examined several issues from a VSD perceptive, including privacy design (Xu et al, 2008), the analysis of and designing for motivation in the context of Wikipedia (Kuznetsov, 2006), in semantic web applications , and some general discussions on ethics in design through VSD (Cummings, 2006;Manders-Huits and Van den Hoven, 2009). …”
