Integrating design problems in mathematics curriculum: an architecture college case study

Abstract: This paper reports an attempt to improve results in the mathematics course in one of the architecture colleges in Israel through practise in applications. The e ect of integrating structure design problems in the calculus curriculum on students' achievements and attitudes was examined. The applied topics in the curriculum were connected to calculus topics and studied through problembased learning activities. The integrated curriculum was implemented and the learning results in experimental and control groups w… Show more

“…Verner and Maor [8] state that the analytical description of the contours of a building, using functions and equations depending on parameters, is a prerequisite for CAD studies. In their experimental proposal, they use pictures of buildings and graphical representations of their contours on squared article sheets.…”

“…There is an intensive debate on applications and modeling in mathematics curricula for engineering students. Many educators believe that applied mathematics skills can be developed in undergraduate mathematics courses, particularly in calculus [4][5][6] . Kumar and Jalkio 7 proposed a conceptual framework for teaching mathematics from the application point of view.…”
