Integrated Whole-Body PET/MR Hybrid Imaging

Abstract: Integrated PET/MR hybrid imaging is feasible in a clinical setting with similar detection rates as those of PET/CT. Attenuation correction can be performed sufficiently with Dixon sequences, although bone is disregarded. The administration of specific radiotracers and dedicated imaging sequences will foster this hybrid imaging modality in various indications.

“…Measurement of glucose metabolism by PET/MRI showed reproducible results and the PET image quality from PET/ MRI is not deteriorated when comparing with that from PET/CT scans [1][2][3][4]. Furthermore, PET/MRI provide superior soft tissue contrast to PET/CT and its roles for accurate diagnosis and evaluating therapeutic response in oncologic patients has been expanded [5,6].…”

“…The hybrid PET/MR system is equipped with a full set of phased-array RF receiver coils that cover the patient's body and that connect to 32 independent RF receiver channels (Tim, Total imaging matrix, Siemens AG Healthcare Sector, Erlangen, Germany). 13 PET AC of the hybrid system is performed in two steps. Attenuation maps of MR-visible objects ("human" μ-map) are based on a Dixon-VIBE sequence.…”

“…By now, first clinical trials with the whole-body PET/MR hybrid system have been conducted and compared to PET/CT acquisitions. [11][12][13] A major challenge in PET/MR imaging is PET attenuation correction (AC) (Ref. 14) a precondition to provide correct quantitative values with PET.…”

“…The use of respiratory triggering or phase reordering can minimise any significant respiratory-related motion artefacts that may be present. Second, the implementation of MR-based motion-correction technologies to correct for gross patient motion and breathing in view of the relatively long PET data acquisition times seems promising [33]. Third, the susceptibility artefacts in DWI can be minimised by using half-Fourier acquisition single-shot turbo spin echo (HASTE) techniques [34].…”
