For preservation efforts and stability assessment of historic structures it is imperative to understand the extent of existing damages and possible modes for how they could have occurred. The aim of this work is to illustrate the importance of integrating documentation, non-destructive testing, and numerical modeling for damage assessment of heritage structures. In particular, this work explores the synthesis of these techniques on a plastered masonry wall in Palazzo Vecchio. Laser scanning was used to capture the geometry of the wall while terrestrial photogrammetry and high-resolution images were used to document the magnitude of cracking in the plaster layer. High resolution thermal images were used to document the distribution of stones and additional cracks not visible through the plaster layer. The results of documentation and non-destructive testing were used to generate an as-built model for structural analysis. Finite distinct element modeling was used to simulate the response of the wall to a series of loading conditions. By comparing the results of simulation to existing crack patterns, theories for how the damage occurred were generated.

Detecting Forest Road Wearing Course Damage Using Different Methods of Remote Sensing

Currently, a large part of forest roads with a bituminous surface course constructed in the Czech Republic in the second half of the last century has been worn out. The aim of the study is to verify the possibility and the accuracy of the road wearing course damage detected by four different remote sensing methods: close range photogrammetry, terrestrial laser scanning, mobile laser scanning and airborne laser scanning. At the beginning of verification, cross sections of the road surface were surveyed geodetically and then compared with the cross sections created in the DTMs which were acquired using the four methods mentioned above. The differences calculated between particular models and geodetic measurements show that close range photogrammetry achieved an RMSE of 0.0110 m and the RMSE of terrestrial laser scanning was 0.0243 m. Based on these results, we can conclude that these two methods are sufficient for the monitoring of the asphalt wearing course of forest roads. These methods allow precise and objective localization, size and quantification of the road damage. By contrast, mobile laser scanning with an RMSE of 0.3167 m does not reach the required precision for the damage detection of forest roads due to the vegetation that affects the precision of the measurements. Similar results are achieved by airborne laser scanning, with an RMSE of 0.1392 m. As regards the time needed, close range photogrammetry appears to be the most appropriate method for damage detection of forest roads.

Three different non-invasive techniques, namely Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry, Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) and ultrasonic tomography integrated with petrographic data, were applied to characterize two rock samples of a different nature: A pyroclastic rock and a carbonate rock. We started a computation of high-resolution 3D models of the two samples using the TLS technique supported by a digital SfM photogrammetry survey. The resulting radiometric information available, such as reflectivity maps, SfM photogrammetry textured models and patterns of geometrical residuals, were interpreted in order to detect and underline surface materials anomalies by a comparison of reflectance and natural colour anomalies. Starting from the 3D models from previous techniques, a 3D ultrasonic tomography on each rock sample was accurately planned and carried out in order to detect internal defects or sample heterogeneity. The integration of the above three geophysical non-invasive techniques with petrographical data—especially with the textural characteristics of such materials—represents a powerful method for the definition of the heterogeneity of the rocks at a different scale and for calibrating in situ measurements.
