Integrated sampling design for agricultural and socio-economic households surveys: Overview and application in Uganda Harmonized Integrated Survey

Abstract: The 50x2030 Initiative proposes an integrated modular agricultural and rural survey program that promotes the integration of traditional socio-economic household surveys and agricultural surveys in beneficiary countries. An integrated sampling design is proposed to ensure that the integrated survey fulfils the measurement objectives of the traditional surveys in a cost-effective way. This paper will present an overview of the key technical features of the proposed integrated sampling procedures including the d… Show more

“…The approach features an integrated sampling design and a harmonized set of data collection instruments [8]. It gathers agricultural data in the household and non-household sectors alongside socio-economic data, thus generating data that extend beyond traditional agricultural statistics and in turn enabling agricultural and rural analyses that can underpin policies and related programs [9]. Second, the 50x2030 Initiative integrates the use of modern technologies, for instance, sensors and the satellite-based global positioning system or GPS, in microdata collection to ensure that this exercise is objective and cost-effective.…”

“…The literature on survey integration recognizes the benefits of integrated sampling strategies, highlighting the substantial reduction in survey costs, especially if the surveys to be integrated show a non-negligible overlap among the populations of interest, if they use similar sampling methods, or they have interlinked measurement objectives [11][12][13]. The UHIS inherited the objectives of the Annual Agricultural Survey and the National Panel Survey.…”

“…As mentioned above, an important feature of the UHIS is the inclusion of non-household sector holdings in the survey. 10 Recognizing the importance of this sector for the calculation of comprehensive agri- The work undertaken to integrate the non-household sector holdings in the survey program followed the good practices and lessons learned from other countries documented by 50x30 Initiative [11], and Bako et al [12,13]. As frequently happens in developing economies, the main aim of the process was the development of an accurate frame that was complete, recent, and not overlapping with the household sector.…”
