This chapter deals with the integrated design of the elastic structural system and the viscoelastic dissipative bracing system to achieve an expected seismic design displacement. The variables that characterize the design problem, their domain and the steps of the proposed methodology are illustrated and commented in details by taking into account the concepts described in the previous chapters. A set of seven historical unscaled acceleration records is selected to develop dynamic analyses by testing the proposed integrated design methodology. With reference to an equivalent SDOF integrated system, a cost index, assumed as an optimized objective function and defined on the design variables, is described in order to find the optimal design in economic terms, or rather, the economically optimal combination of the design variables for each expected seismic target performance. Finally, the extension of the results, developed on the substitute structure, to a viscoelastically and proportionally damped MDOF framed integrated system is explained in order to design the least expensive regular system. Integrated Seismic Design PhilosophyOver the past years, structure and control systems have been independently designed and, in some cases, optimized. Over the last 30 years, a lot of research has been developed on the integrated optimal design of structural/control systems.Specifically, the idea is to consider both the viscoelastic resources of the bracingdamper system as well as the elastic ones of the structural system from the beginning of design in order to obtain an integrated design of elastic structural/viscoelastic control systems. In this sense, the main variables that characterize the dynamic response of both systems are investigated as variables to be simultaneously optimized within the same design, the so-called ''integrated design''

Electricity generation in China is currently dominated by thermal power generation (TPG). To achieve sustainable development during electricity generation, this study compares the sustainability of the six main approaches for electricity generation in Liaoning Province: thermal power, nuclear power, wind power, hydropower, photovoltaic power, and biomass power generation. First, the environmental impact and unit electricity generation cost (UEGC) of each electricity generation approach is calculated and analyzed from the perspectives of both life‐cycle assessment (LCA) and life‐cycle cost (LCC). Then, the energy potential of electricity generation approaches in Liaoning Province is calculated. Finally, the entropy‐weighted method is used to combine the environmental impacts, UEGC, and energy potentials of each energy source, producing a mathematical evaluation model for determining the sustainability of electricity generation. As a result, the six approaches are ranked in terms of electricity sustainability in Liaoning Province as follows: wind power, nuclear power, biomass power, hydropower, solar power, and thermal power. In future development of the electricity industry, Liaoning Province should increase the proportion of wind power, nuclear power, and biomass power generation in total installed capacity and reduce the proportion of thermal power in total installed capacity.

Tuned mass dampers (TMD) are well known as one of the most widely adopted devices in vibration control passive strategies. In the past few decades, many methods have been developed to fi nd the optimal parameters of a TMD installed on a structure and subjected to a random base excitation process, but most of them are usually based on an implicit assumption that all of the structural parameters are deterministic. However, in many real cases this simplifi cation is unacceptable, so robust optimal design criteria becomes a viable alternative to better support engineers in the design process. In Robust Design Optimization (RDO) approaches, indeed the solution must be able to not only minimize the performance but also to limit its variation induced by uncertainty. Most of the currently available RDO methods are based on a probabilistic description of the model uncertainty, even if in many cases they are not able to explicitly include the infl uence of all the possible sources of uncertainties. Therefore, in this study, a fuzzy version of the robust TMD design optimization problem is proposed. The consistency of the fuzzy approach is studied with respect to the available non-probabilistic formulations reported in the literature and an application to an example of a robust design of a linear TMD subjected to base random vibrations in the presence of fuzzy uncertainties. The results show that the proposed fuzzy-based approach is able to give a set of optimal solutions both in terms of structural effi ciency and sensitivity to mechanical and environmental uncertainties.
