Integrated-Optic Add/Drop Multiplexing of Free-Space Waves for Intra-Board Chip-to-Chip Optical Interconnects

Abstract: The crystal structure of NaV 6 O 11 stays hexagonal at least to 8.06 GPa at room temperature as deduced from x-ray powder and single-crystal diffraction data measured in diamond anvil cells. The material is more compressible along the c axis and the distortion of the hexagonal close packing increases on compression. Its compressibility is given by a Murnaghan equation of state with the zero-pressure bulk modulus B 0 = 177(9) GPa and the unit-cell volume at ambient pressure V 0 = 369.9(4)Å 3 (B = 4.00). The occ… Show more

“…A combination of a guided-mode-selective focusing grating coupler (FGC) [10] and a different-guided-mode coupling distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) [11] was proposed and demonstrated as a free-space-wave add-drop multiplexer [12]. A schematic view of the thin-film-waveguide WDM optical interconnects is illustrated in Fig.…”

“…A free-space-wave add/drop multi/demultiplexer consists of a guided-mode-selective FGC 13) and a different-guidedmode-coupling DBR. 14,15) For example, a spherical freespace wave diverging from a VCSEL of wavelength i is coupled and collimated by FGC to the TE 1 mode propagating to the left-hand side in the waveguide, then reflected by DBR to the TE 0 mode. DBR has been designed so that the guided waves of wavelengths other than i pass through DBR.…”

“…On the other hand, we have proposed and investigated an integrated-optic configuration using a thin-film waveguide as optical signal paths. 10,[17][18][19][20][21][22][23] The integrated-optic configuration utilizes wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) technique with free-space-wave add/drop multiplexers consisting of focusing grating couplers (FGCs) and distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs). The proposed configuration has advantages in compatibility with printed circuit boards, compactness, and 2-D parallel signal transmission.…”
