Integrated Off-Site Construction Design Process including DfMA Considerations

Abstract: Off-site construction (OSC) offers a promising means to improve the efficiency of construction projects. However, the lack of experience and knowledge regarding its use results in errors in design owing to conflicts and omissions of considerations for OSC projects. To mitigate these problems, the design for manufacturing and assembly (DfMA) is widely used to include the considerations in the OSC design process. Several studies concerning the DfMA application in OSC have been performed, but the comprehensive de… Show more

“…In fact, through the review of the documentation available, the main observation was that OSCrelated literature is heavily focused on standard CAD-based design procedures [100,101]. In addition, OSC involves specific construction techniques that require high-level detailing, especially for manufacturing and assembly [102,103]. For such reasons, designers are inclined to use conventional CAD processes rather than disruptive computational systems for addressing prefabricated or modular designs.…”

“…Data-data dan pembuktian bagi menyakinkan industri pembinaan untuk melaksanakan DfMA bersama BIM dalam pembinaan juga masih sedikit. Oleh itu, kajian berkenaan pelaksanaan DfMA bersama BIM dalam pembinaan terutama bagi IBS perlu ditingkatkan (Hyun et al 2022). Tahap pemahaman dan pelaksanaan DfMA dalam industri pembinaan di Malaysia juga adalah tidak jelas.…”

“…However, the industry is still unable to tap the full potential of IBS where projects that already apply IBS still have issues with time and cost overrun and dependency on unskilled labour [17]. The lack of communication and cooperation [17][18][19] together with lack of knowledge and experience [20] among major stakeholders are the main issues.…”
