Integrated monitoring of chemicals and their effects on four sentinel species, Limanda limanda, Platichthys flesus, Nucella lapillus and Mytilus sp., in Seine Bay: A key step towards applying biological effects to monitoring

Abstract: The International workshop on Integrated Assessment of CONtaminants impacts on the North sea (ICON) provided a framework to validate the application of chemical and biological assessment thresholds (BACs and EACs) in the Seine Bay in France. Bioassays (oyster larval anomalies, Corophium arenarium toxicity assay and DR Calux) for sediment and biomarkers: ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, lysosomal membrane stability (LMS), DNA strand breaks using the Comet assay… Show more

“…The Seine estuary is one of the most anthropogenically polluted estuaries in Europe (Carpentier et al, 2002;Cachot et al, 2006;Burgeot et al, 2017). Its basin covers more than a quarter of the French population and includes major harbours, industrial and agricultural areas (Mouny & Dauvin, 2002;Dévier et al, 2013;Erraud et al, 2018).…”

“…In order to monitor the health status of fish in natura, many studies have measured biomarkers as cost-effective, sensitive and early warning signals of pollution in aquatic ecosystems (Amiard-Triquet and Berthet, 2015). Thus, classical biomarkers were carried out on Seine fish to detect DNA damages (Comet test, DNA adduct), neurotoxicity (AChE assay), detoxification process (EROD), and endocrine disruptions (Intersex, VTG levels) (Minier et al, 2000;Minier and Amara, 2008;Burgeot et al, 2017).…”

“…The Seine estuary (France) is considered as one of the most polluted estuaries in Europe, subject to an important anthropogenic pressure due to its location at the outlet of the Seine watershed (Burgeot et al, 2017;Cachot et al, 2006;Carpentier et al, 2002;Meybeck et al, 2004). The Seine basin represents a territory of 78 600 km and welcomes more than a quarter of the French population (Dévier et al, 2013).…”

“…As cephalopods are generally short-lived taxa, they are known to swiftly respond to drastic climate and environmental perturbations, thus, making them effective biological sentinel of climatic changes [17,18]. In light of the rapidly changing climate, sentinel species can provide valuable information on ecosystem function, distinguish ocean and human health-related risks and forecast future changes [19][20][21]. Taking these characteristics into account and building upon the results of our foregoing work [6,22,23], we hereby extended our present analyses of squid-environment interactions to implement a simple yet ecologically pertinent approach to quantify the changes in potential squid habitat in the North Pacific under the recent thermal regimes, marked by distinct phase transitions of the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) between 1999 and 2013.…”
