Integrated intravascular ultrasound and optical coherence tomography technology: a promising tool to identify vulnerable plaques [INVITED PAPER]

Abstract: Heart attack is mainly caused by the rupture of a vulnerable plaque. IVUS-OCT is a novel medical imaging modality that provides opportunities for accurate assessment of vulnerable plaques in vivo in patients. IVUS provides deep penetration to image the whole necrotic core while OCT enables accurate measurement of the fibrous cap of a plaque owing to its high resolution. In this paper, the authors describe the fundamentals, the technical designs and the applications of IVUS-OCT technology. Results from cadaver … Show more

“…Also, data collection is very straightforward if the FRET signal might be converted into the electrical one. Numerous wired detectors [31,32], which are already used in clinical practice, might be successfully applied for measuring electrical signals. In this section, we describe an example of a medical system for gathering local data about a human body state.…”

“…The¯rst design of an IVUS-OCT system was demonstrated in 2010. [35][36][37][38][39] Currently, several companies are in the process of commercializing IVUS-OCT technology, including Conavi Medical, Inc. and OCT Medical Imaging, Inc. Figure 1(a) depicts a typical IVUS-OCT system design. The trigger signal from the sweptsource laser is used to synchronize the short acoustic pulse emission as well as the data acquisition of IVUS and IVOCT.…”

“…IVUS is today a widely used method in clinics. Another intravascular imaging method, optical coherence tomography (OCT), has a lower penetration depth but a better axial resolution of 10 m [5]. Even though flushing of the artery is necessary due to strong signal attenuation through blood, compared to IVUS, OCT offers better assessment of the atherosclerotic plaques.…”
