Integrated Expansion Planning of Gas-Electricity System: A Case Study in Iran

Abstract: Gas-fired power plants are connection points between gas and electricity networks which are growing in installation due to their high efficiency rates and flexibilities. The main purpose of this paper is to adjust integrated expansion planning of gas-electricity system. In integrated expansion planning it is assumed that a central entity such as Ministry of Energy is responsible for the expansion of both gas and electricity networks. Results of the proposed method are examined in Khorasan province of Iran as a… Show more

“…In integrated method a single entity is responsible for expansion of both gas and electricity networks [14]. Numerical results show that without DR program, electricity network intends to add new capacity of 1000 MW in J and increase the capacity of B3 by 600 MW.…”

“…A. Integrated expansion model The main objective of the integrated expansion planning is to supply the loads with minimum total cost which includes both operation and investment costs [14]. In this way supplying new loads in gas network could be achieved by adding new pipelines if needed.…”

“…Compared to other types of fossil fuel natural gas is an efficient source of energy that offers lower carbon emissions. Coal power plants are retiring by gas consuming generating units (GCGUs) as they have higher efficiency, lower capital cost and lower carbon emissions [1]. On the other hand, GCGUs in combination with energy storages have the advantage of the flexibility to mitigate growing renewable fluctuations [2].…”

“…The failure of a power line can lead to the inability of distribution substations, which may cause electrical energy not to be delivered to electric compressors in the gas network. The failure of a gas pipeline, as a consequence of a deficient operation, can cause the loss of fuel for the coupled electric generators [16]. In both cases, a disturbance can spread to the other system and, ultimately, to the end users.…”
