This paper examines the relationships between environmental regulations, firms' innovation and private sustainability benefits using nine case studies of UK and Chinese firms. It aims to unravel the mechanisms by which a firm's environmental behaviour in improving its private benefits of sustainability is influenced by its relationship with the government, which primarily enacts regulations to maximise public sustainability benefits in the interests of society as a whole. The paper takes its cue from the Porter hypothesis to make some broad preliminary assumptions to inform the research design. A conceptual framework was developed through inductive case studies using template analysis. The results show that depending on firms' resources and capabilities, those that adopt a more dynamic approach to respond to environmental regulations innovatively and take a proactive approach to manage their environmental performance are generally better able to reap the private benefits of sustainability.

Purpose -Recent OECD (2010, 2011) reports argue that eco-innovation is the key to realising growth. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the drivers of eco-innovation and to compare the impact of eco-innovation and non-eco-innovation on firm performance. The paper provides insights into the role government regulation can play in directing and stimulating eco-innovation. Design/methodology/approach -The approach utilised by this paper is empirical in nature. A modified innovation production function is used to assess the impact of regulation, consumer expectations and voluntary agreements on the performance of eco-innovation while a knowledge augmented production function is used to assess the impact of eco-innovation on firm performance. Findings -The findings suggest that regulation and customer perception can explain a firm"s decision to engage in eco-innovation. Eco-innovation is also found to be more important than non-eco-innovation in determining firm performance. Research limitations/implications -Due to the limited availability of accounting data this paper uses turnover per worker as the measure of firm performance. As a result it is not possible to assess the impact of eco-innovation on firm costs. Social implications -The finding that regulation drives eco-innovation and that there is no trade-off between the optimal outcomes of lower levels of pollution for society and higher profit margins for businesses suggests that regulators and policy makers can stimulate growth and create a greener society. Originality/value -This paper provides an empirical analysis of the Porter and van der Linde"s (1995) theory of environmental regulation and firm performance using novel real world data from over 2,000 Irish businesses.

The nature of the relationship between environmental performance (EP) and firm performance (FP) of corporations is a long standing and contentious issue in the literature. This study is intended to advance this debate by arguing for the existence of curvilinear relationship and empirically testing the same using survey data on UK manufacturing firms. FP is captured in terms of growth in sales and market share. Our results show evidence for a quadratic relationship-as firms improve their EP, they seem to achieve much higher levels of FP. These results are consistent with the resource-based view of a firm; as firms engage in EP activities, they are able to gain inimitable knowledge that helps in further learning to further improve performance. Based on our results, we suggest that new studies focus on strategies to extend the period of increasing returns and maximizing the benefits of the positive association between EP and FP.
