Integrated Decision Support Systems (IDSS) for Dairy Farming: A Discussion on How to Improve Their Sustained Adoption

Abstract: Dairy farm decision support systems (DSS) are tools which help dairy farmers to solve complex problems by improving the decision-making processes. In this paper, we are interested in newer generation, integrated DSS (IDSS), which additionally and concurrently: (1) receive continuous data feed from on-farm and off-farm data collection systems and (2) integrate more than one data stream to produce insightful outcomes. The scientific community and the allied dairy community have not been successful in developing,… Show more

“…A literature review of technology adoption [38] also reported that the primary drivers of adoption are the observed usefulness and the ease of use. More recently, Baldin et al [40] discussed the sustainable adoption of integrated decision support tools and highlighted the importance of easy implementation, but also underlined the willingness of the dairy industry to work together to coordinate a data sharing process that benefits the entire system. In addition, lack of transparency and confidence in data security are also hurdles for adoption technologies [8].…”

“…These and internal discussions identified those topics with the greatest need for more in-depth discussion. Among those needs were the sustainable adoption of decision support tools, which was recently published [19], and data governance, which is addressed in this article.…”

“…Therefore, the integration of the following nine aspects: cooperation; inclusion; financing; diversification; communication; policies; knowledge with entrepreneurship; and production enables the creation of sustainable values. The key tool for the integration of these aspects is the data sharing (either as re-using of the open data or as contractual sharing), enabled by the effective data governance [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14].…”
