Integrated Data Capturing Requirements for 3d Semantic Modelling of Cultural Heritage: The Inception Protocol

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The generation of high quality 3D models can be still very time-consuming and expensive, and the outcome of digital reconstructions is frequently provided in formats that are not interoperable, and therefore cannot be easily accessed. This challenge is even more crucial for complex architectures and large heritage sites, which involve a large amount of data to be acquired, managed and enriched by metadata. In this framework, the ongoing EU funded project INCEPTION -Inclusive Cultural Heritage in Europ… Show more

“…Various documentation processes need to be performed in an effective and efficient manner, for the acquisition of information, regarding the state of preservation of the historic building, so that all the necessary information is acquired. For this purpose, in cultural heritage, the documentation processes are based on developed guidelines and protocols, to obtain the optimum results according to the type of cultural heritage asset under study and the purpose of each investigation, including inspection, diagnosis, intervention studies and intervention works monitoring and assessment [46][47][48]. For the specific documentation process, the historic building under study requires the contribution of heterogeneous information and datasets.…”

“…The architectural space becomes the foundations, the common core and the "connection" for the creation of a protocol for optimizing the 3D documentation of cultural heritage. The methodology set as a priority the unconventional features/ geometries, unique and complex within Heritage, avoiding the "segmentation" of data acquired and facilitating data access and use through an inclusive approach [11].…”

“…Among several related projects dealing with Heritage 3D modelling, INCEPTION is relevant and differentiates from these projects because it is focused on heritage "spaces" (complex architectures and sites), on semantic enrichment -creating 3D models for multiple purposes, needs and level of knowledge of the end-usersand on the collection of all information in a unique Platform [2].…”
