Integral three-dimensional television with video system using pixel-offset method

Abstract: Integral three-dimensional (3D) television based on integral imaging requires huge amounts of information. Previously, we constructed an Integral 3D television using Super Hi-Vision (SHV) technology, with 7680 pixels horizontally and 4320 pixels vertically. We report on improved image quality through the development of video system with an equivalent of 8000 scan lines for use with Integral 3D television. We conducted experiments to evaluate the resolution of 3D images using an experimental setup and were able… Show more

“…Since Lippmann first reported 34 a static integral photography display, many light field video displays have been proposed. [34][35][36][37][38][39] In these displays, numerous elemental images are arranged vertically and horizontally, and a microlens array (MLA) is used to control the directions of light rays and other applications of the HOE have been reported. However, in the previous research, the HOEs were fabricated by copying a phase distribution generated by real existing optics, such as MLAs, objective lenses, or optical diffusers.…”

“…They realized an integral 3-D image consisting of ∼100;000 pixels using the projector. 11 However, it is currently difficult to fabricate a single display element that significantly exceeds 8K, and it is difficult to improve the performance of an integral 3-D image further using a single display device.…”

“…We have been developing a 3D capture system by means of an 8K Super Hi-vision (8K) camera 7 and pixel-offset technique to improve the quality of the 3D image. 8 However, it is difficult to develop a 3D capture system by means of a single camera because cameras with much more than 8K pixels are not available at present.…”
