Integral‐Color Plastic Liquid Crystal Display The Ultimate Flat Panel Display

Light reflection from computer monitors, car dashboards and any other optical surface can impair the legibility of displays, degrade transmission of optical components and in some cases may even pose safety hazards. Antireflective coatings are therefore widely used, but existing antireflection technologies often perform sub-optimally or are expensive to implement. Here we present an alternative approach to antireflection coatings, based on an extension of our photo-aligning and photo-patterning technology for liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) and liquid-crystal polymer films with smooth surfaces to optical polymer films with controlled surface topologies. Nano- and micro-corrugated topologies are shown to result from optically induced monomer phase-separation on the polymer surfaces. The properties of the resulting films make them suitable high-performance and low-cost antireflection coatings for optical components of virtually any size, shape and material. Moreover, the approach can be used to form a wide range of other functional polymer thin films with isotropic as well as anisotropic topologies. For example, films can be produced whose optical birefringence exceeds that of the birefringence of the polymer material itself. These new films can also be used as diffractive thin films, diffusers, and directional reflectors which preserve light polarization, or as substrates for aligning liquid crystals to produce bright, low-power-consumption LCDs with integrated optical functions and memory.

Indium tin oxide (ITO) films deposited on polyester substrates are a key material in the development of two exciting technologies, touchscreens and flexible liquid crystal displays. The new generation “plastic” displays and touchscreens must be flexible and robust, have excellent optical properties, and be inexpensive. We report on the mechanical and electrical reliability of ITO on a polyethylene terephthalate substrate (PET). We show that the mechanical behavior of the ITO film is dominated by the properties of the substrate and that the deformation of the substrate is mapped by the crack patterns in the ITO. This is most strongly evidenced in the simulated wear of a touchscreen where failure after >50000 pen strokes is primarily due to cracking of the ITO as a result of increased substrate deformation over time. In addition the mechanical reliability of the ITO layer is dependent on the film thickness. Cracking was observed in a 105 nm thick ITO film at a strain of 0.022 and for a 16.8 nm thick film at 0.003. The thickness and hence sheet resistance of the film effectively limits the maximum allowable deformation of the substrate and must be considered in the design of suitable display and touchscreen devices. In addition we report on the change in resistance with time-at- temperature and relate this to the shrinkage of the substrate.

We discuss the design and performance of a full color transmissive display based on the folded Solc filter design. Sharp et. al. 5 suggested the use of a modified Solc filter as a colorswitch and for use as a display device 7 . Del Pico 6 suggested its use as a direct view device using plastic substrates and LCP's to solve some parallax issues. However no details of its operation were given. The design incorporates three individual stacks each responsible for producing RGB without the use of color filters, this offer high color purity and brightness along with the promise of low power consumption. In this paper the design of such a system is considered in detail.
