“…In rainbow trout, Mg deficiency also causes calcinosis of the kidney, vertebral deformity and degeneration of muscle fibers and epithelial cells of the pyloric cecum and gill filaments [ 422 , 429 ]. A low concentration of Mg in water reduced the Mn concentration of eggs in carp, which reduced the hatchability of eggs and survival of offspring and also caused deformities and tissue necrosis [ 430 ].…”

“…It was demonstrated that rainbow trout (Shearer & Asg ard 1992) and tilapia (Van Der Velden et al 1991) were able to utilise waterborne magnesium to fulfil the requirement for growth when fed low Mg diets for periods up to 4 weeks. Mg uptake from water is dependent on the Mg concentration of water (Van Der Velden et al 1991) and may not be sufficient to meet the need of a fast-growing fish on a long term (Dabrowska et al 1991). Moreover, a recent study in gibel carp (Han et al 2012) conducted in water containing 10-12 mg Mg L À1 reports a lack of response in growth to increasing levels of dietary magnesium.…”

“…More specifically, there is the need for higher dietary Mg supplementation in the case of purified diets for fast-growing, juvenile surubim. It may also indicate an increased rate of Mg intake from water, the phenomena described earlier in tropical fish, tilapia (Van der Velden, Kolar & Flik 1991).…”
