Insulin therapy

Abstract: Insulin therapy is a vital hormone replacement therapy in type 1 diabetes mellitus. In type 2 diabetes, insulin is indicated if glycaemic goals are not reached by oral anti diabetics, as well as for metabolic detoriation, co-morbidities, surgery, pregnancy or contradictions against oral anti diabetics. Insulin preparations are characterized by the onset of the insulin action, the peak profile and duration of action. Available are short acting, long-acting and premixed preparations of human insulin, and insulin… Show more

“…According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 422 million people are living with diabetes worldwide [ 2 ]. Despite various antidiabetic drugs being used in the management of diabetes, exogenous insulin remains the gold standard treatment for type 1 diabetes [ 3 ]. Insulin, an anabolic hormone, plays a major role in maintaining glucose homeostasis through various mechanisms including glucose uptake by the skeletal muscle and the adipose tissues, promoting glycogenesis and inhibiting glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis [ 4 , 5 ].…”

“…NAFLD may be connected to autoimmune disease and mitophagy associated with impairment in insulin secretion and cardiovascular disease [18][19][20]. In Type 1 diabetes the use of insulin therapy has been assessed with the critical importance to reduce hyperglycemia, severe hypoglycemia and the development of long-term complications [21][22][23]. Insulin therapy should be carefully evaluated in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes with relevance to reduction in plasma glucose levels [24].…”
