Insulin Delivery Devices

Abstract: More than 6million Americans require daily injections of insulin. Insulin therapy, using the vial and syringe method, can be complicated and time consuming. Insulin pens were introduced in the United States in 1987 and have simplified insulin administration for many patients. Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion (insulin pumps or CSII) is being utilized to achieve and maintain tight glycemic control for personswith Diabetes Mellitus (DM). CSII therapy has existed since the 1960s. These insulin delivery dev… Show more

“…When using a traditional syringe system, the lubrication material is often removed when inserting the needle through the insulin cartridge rubber stopper, creating a more painful injection experience. 15 The NovoPen family uses NovoFine, NovoFine Plus, and NovoTwist needles, which are specifically designed to address usability and patient comfort. 5 , 7 , 8 NovoFine needles have two caps: an outer needle cap and a second inner needle cap that also covers the needle.…”

“…Unpredictable lifestyles, irregular eating patterns, pain upon injection, and the social stigma associated with injecting in public are the factors that make adhering to a particular treatment regimen challenging. 12 15 Children and adolescents also require a lower and more accurate dose of insulin to maintain good glycemic control due to their smaller body size. It is important for older children to begin to take responsibility for calculating doses and preparing devices for injection without appropriate guidance from parents and caregivers.…”

“…The method by which insulin is administered has been shown to impact patient acceptability of insulin therapy and quality of life, and may serve as a key barrier to insulin initiation [20]. Previously, the predominant route of insulin administration for patients with diabetes was the syringe and vial.…”
